IBM laptop and issues

i recently bought an older IBM laptop R30. it seemed OK at first. but when i used it the next day it was glitchy... it would go into hibernation w/o me asking it to. sometimes it keeps making this beeping sound when i have it plugged into the UPS (but no beeping when it isn't).

anyway, the weirdest thing i saw was then when i checked "view system information" under My Computer (this is Win XP Pro), it showed the processor as only 487Mhz when it should have been 1 gz (996Mhz). i rebooted and it showed the correct CPU speed and the beeping seems to have stopped.

does anyone know what might have caused this? thanks.

thanks Asianrice X.

the hibernation and beeping issue has subsided. however, whenver i put the computer into stand by mode, right before it goes into that mode the screen will go black and show some sybols (e.g. @ symbol), then go into stand by mode.

whenever i take it out of stand by mode, it says "preparing for stand by" and then allows me to log back into Windows XP.

does anyone know what that's about?
