Hi and Merry Christmas all.
I just wanted an opinion from any of you who has tried or heard about the IBM 80GB 7200rpm IDE ATA100 2MB BUFFER INTERNAL hard drives as a primary and only drive in an athlon64 system that i am trying to get for my friend. It comes with 3 year warranty...

Are they loud? or have a bad reputation ? I need ur opinion...

Here are full specifics:

Features:
7200 RPM spindle speed
SeaShield board protection
G Force Protection of 350 Gs
SBT "sound barrier technology"

Specifications:
Capacity: 80 GB
Speed: 7200 rpm
Seek time: 8.9 ms avg
Interface: Ultra ATA/100
Data Buffer: 2 MB
Warranty: 3 Year Limited Manufacturer Warranty

suggest for that system you look for a 7200rpm hdd with 8Mb buffer & not a 2Mb one as it'll have a better overall performance.

SeaShield? Wait, we talkin' Seagate or IBM, now 😕

The Hitachi/IBM units may periodically make a sound reminiscent of possessed kittens. My little sister's does (120GB with 8MB cache). Its idle noise is pretty tolerable and seeks are audible but pleasant, both a bit quieter than my Cheetah 15k.3. But some people would consider that hugely loud, so 😕. If you want quietness, you might hit http://www.silentpcreview.com for more ideas on drives, fans, etc.
