suggest for that system you look for a 7200rpm hdd with 8Mb buffer & not a 2Mb one as it'll have a better overall performance.

SeaShield? Wait, we talkin' Seagate or IBM, now

The Hitachi/IBM units may periodically make a sound reminiscent of possessed kittens. My little sister's does (120GB with 8MB cache). Its idle noise is pretty tolerable and seeks are audible but pleasant, both a bit quieter than my Cheetah 15k.3. But some people would consider that hugely loud, so . If you want quietness, you might hit http://www.silentpcreview.com for more ideas on drives, fans, etc.
