Man, i can belive how bad these ibms are l8ly. I just rmaed 2 fat azz boxes of them today. And only a couple of WD's. Im thinking of dumpin gthese ibms for seagates, anyone have anything good or bad to say about seagates?
The IBM's are fine- the 75GXPs had some issues that affected certain drives (they were made in two different plants and one of them had issues...i think- not positive), however the 60GXP (newer) are great! =)
Well my drives are 75gxp from hungary, and these have bene peices of crap, the speed is great tho. I just started getting in these 60gxps from thailand and have rma'ed a few already....sheesh...
From what i've heard IBM 60gxp's are great and have no problems. Hopefully they dont have a developing problem like some of the 75Gxp's. I have had great luck with Maxtor. You don't hear to many problems with Maxtor's, at least not around here, and they are almost as fast as the IBM's. From what I remember wasn't it Quantum that Maxtor bought? Meaning that Quantum is no longer.
I had a quantum for like 4 years, bigfoot, worked fine untiul i dropped it. That was before maxtor and quantum hook up. We sold maxtors at my store last year and had all sorts of problems. So are quntum drives bascailly made in teh same places maxtors are now? Just rebadged?
The IBM 75 GPX that I have has been fine, I think that the issues were confined to cirtain batches. Have also used several Maxtors and Seagate 7200's in some of my other computers. They have all been fine too.
I use a Seagate Barracuda ATA III ST340824A, and it gives me no problems... heres a review link, and the second the pricewatch search thread. The greatest thing about it is that it is almost silent. You can probably find something cheaper, but just offering my opinion.

Weird, 'cause Maxtor has been making extremely reliable HDDs during the past two years, they were considered a great alternative to those unreliable IBMs from Hungary. As for those Quantums, right now they're just rebadged, everything is changed to have Maxtor on them, but the outfit and tech are still Quantum. Whats funny is that Maxtor is having two extremely similar models in the budget segment, but you'll know immediately which is Maxtor's and which is Quantum's(see link). Another manufacturer that's been consistently making reliable hard drive is Seagate; currently those are the only brands I use.
