IBM HD Going Bad???

I have a IBM 75gxp 75GB, since about august. Recently during a check disk it started making 3 long clicking sounds repeatedly near the end of the test. Is this bad? I have almost 70GB of very important data i cant lose. Will some kind of ghost work for me? What should i do, is there a test i can do on the drive?

Ill check back in the morning, gotta go to bed.

Thanks

Clicking means the drive is going to fail very soon so backup your data ASAP! Also call their tech support and have them send out a replacement first. That way you can copy things over then send them back the defective one.

It almost certainly sounds like your hard drive has developed the click'o'death. If the drive has important data on it back it up asap and then send the drive back to IBM for replacement, don't forget to run the DFT (linked above) on it first to diagnose the exact problem.

Ahhh, i already had a 30gb drive fail on me... Is it just the 75gxp that sucks, or do the 60gxp and 120gxp suck as well. I think i will sell my replacement and get another drive....

Thanks for the info!

What should i use to back up, can i use ghost or something? I have too much data! I guess ill lose all my movies...

120's are fairly new, so problem won't surface for a while. The GXP75 are rumored/know to go bad. I personally have had one for 14 months with no problems; however, I picked of a small back-up hhd to archive my important stuff just in case....

I hope yours does not die.
