IBM hard drive question

Hello all, I am looking at dropping another 40gig drive in and was over at newegg and saw they have 2 different IBM 40gig drives. One is a 60GXP and one is a 120GXP. Does anyone know what the difference is with these drives. Everything else looks the same. Thanks.

I think the 60gxp's had issues...someone here will correct me I am sure.
The 120 is the newer series of drives form IBM and I have not heard much about them yet.

the 75 gxp's had issues actually, so they replaced them with the 60gxps...now, though, the newest is the 120 gxp's

i think they also add some sort of sound dampening thingy as well

here is the specs for the 60's

here is the specs for the 120's

i suppose i'd go with the 120 if it's the same price

Don't ever buy IBM HD's... You'll regret it. I'm telling you.

If you want a really fast HD, buy Western Digital.

If you want a dead silent HD, buy Seagate Barracuda IV.

I recommend Seagate over WD. Ask anyone here.

From what I'm hearing the 60GXP's have started to have some issues as well. If I were buying a hard drive right now, I'd stay clear of IBM.

Hmm. Thanks for the reply's. Though I have never had any issues with the many IBM drives that I have out in my systems as well as cutomers systems I am always willing to try something new and will look into those seagate drives. Seems to get really good reviews at newegg. Thanks again.

IBM has been pretty good in the past. However, recently, their drives have taken a very, very steep turn downward. I have a 20GB drive that I got from them 2 years ago and It works perfectly (its still in my system today, actually)

I have a 60GXP and I'm still a little unsure of the quality. It used to fail the DFT, but I just ran it again yesterday and it passed. Not sure whether the bad sectors have just been remapped.

I have a 40gb 60gxp I just received from IBM to replace another drive I RMA'd. It's for sale in this thread.

PS - I'm getting rid of it because I already have 2 60gb IBM drives in my computer, and I figured I don't really need 160gb of drive space. 🙂
