IBM hard drive problem

Hi, my friend has a problem:

i have a 60gb ibm hard drive with 3 partitions (c: winxp, d: programs, e: files). ive only had errors on c where the os was, which wasn't a big deal since the files were fine. except its happened, the e partition has messed up. i was workin with the files on e, heard the hd making a "trying real hard to read" noise, and rebooted. when i finally got back into windows, it reported the e drive as unformatted. everything was going slow as it tried to find stuff from the e drive. im just wondering if there's anything i can do to restore the files or if i really have to format it. i tried running ibm's drive fitness, but it doesn't recognize the partitions, it only treats the hd as one. any input would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.
