IBM GXP Weird Noise

recently Im having a little weird problem with my IBM GXP 75 Gb Hardrive.
When I open 'some' folders or programs... It makes a BIG noise and lags time of loading. Im not really sure whats happening and why its doing so. any ideas?

hmm... you might want to consider starting to backup your data because it might be signs of future harddrive failure. you might want to send ibm tech support an email or call em up because they'll probably have the best idea about what's going on.

The 75GXP's have huge reliability issues.... if I were you I would call IBM Tech support and "RMA" it(return it for a brand new drive). Any abnormal noise in a hard drive is NOT GOOD :-(

Yeah I friend of mine had a 75GXP that did EXACTLY the same thing, failed on him 2 days later, backup and RMA!

Sorry about thet previous posting

Anyway, I agree with what has been posted previously: make a backup NOW. take the drive out and send it back to IBM or your vendor and get a new one. I bought a brand new 60GB 75GXP and the darn thing died on me the second day I had it. Made some noise, took forever to load data and when I ran scandisk the bead sectors just kept on growing exponentially.

I have to say that with the exchange drive I did not have any problems so far, only been a month, but I hope for the best. But be sure: regular backups are a must from now on and at the slightest sign of any problems, the thing comes out.

Another thing you could check out is IBMs own Drive Fitness Test, it's somwhere on their website. Easy to find if you want it.

I did a quick test....

One or more bad sectors found in hardrive
hard disk is defected

What should I do now?
Should I try scandisk?
Should I backup my files? I have a 60 gig and almost 40 is full. What are some effective ways to backup?

Just backup your DATA files -- ie.. files you created.. It would be most silly to backup stuff that can be re-installed..

I've had same sort of problems with IBM drives. The drive gets noisy and fails drive fitness test. Ï've had drives replaced by new ones. Same thing happens again.

I just do the following now whenever the drive gets noisy:
1. backup
2. scan disk / check disk. (defragment disk also seems to work, a reformat always works)

The drive generally seems to work after that (until the next time). The last time I had the noise problem, I couldn't get it to go away with check disk or defragment disk, but the noise went away by itself after about 2 days.

I called IBM when my DFT failed. They told me to run the Erase Disk utility that comes with DFT. I did that and now I'm not having any more problems.

there's also a little windows app util from IBM that will monitor your HD.....

you may want to down load this one as well and keep it running in the background.

Just a thoguht.

<< I did the erase operation of the DFT too. It fixed the drive perfectly, but for how long? >>

I would be very weary about putting critical data files back on that drive! Once a drive fails there is a very good chance it will do so again!

hmm...these kind of posts scare me...my ibm has been running for a year though and it's still good to go!
try turning on the S.M.A.R.T. option in you BIOS

btw...has anyone tried the acoustic management software by IBM? I just installed it today and man does it make the drive quiet!!! i don't even notice the difference in hard disk performance either (probably also due to the fact that you can't even hear a thing when the hard drive is thrashing...hehe)...all i can hear now is my system fans 😀

DO NOT RUN THE FITNESS TEST BEFORE BACKING UP YOUR HARD DRIVE if its gonna fail, thats its most likely point, I have had drives die right in the middle of the fitness test. backup before you do anything else. as people have been saying, its not a good sign at all.
