Hi,

My IBM GXP 60GB just died. Upon doing the bad sector test, it tells me it can delete the bad sectors and recover the drive.

Unfortunately it crashes back to the prompt around 20% of the drive :(

In windows it cannot access the drive period :(

Can anyone suggest a utility to do a sector by sector scan of my drive, so I can at least recover some parts of the disk?

Then hopefully I can just erase the software and then give back to IBM.

Thanks for your replies.

Cheers

Have you tried running the 60GXP as a slave in a different system, to extract data from it?

Which GXP is it? Is it a 75GXP? Just curious, cause I also have a 60GB IBM drive, but it's a 120GXP; I think the 75GXP's were the "deathstar" drives.

Yeah sorry, its a 60GXP 60GB.

Currently it is a slave on a Win2k machine.

When i try to access it, the drive does the bad sector sound (like loud seeking) over and over again for 5 mins.

then I get that the drive is inaccessable.

However, when doing the test initially with the IBM software, it can seek the whole drive.

So, does anyone know of any software, that can scan a whole drive, and then allow you to cut and paste certain sectors of the drive?

Thanks

So let me get this straight.. you can't use or access the drives because they died on you, but you can't RMA them because there is important info on them you can't recover? Sure. that makes sense.

If you send it to IBM, they may recover the data for you, as long as you can refrain yourself from saying "fvck you."

Move the drive as 1 slave and try and access it via a new 1 and proper OS set-up

The drive is already a slave.. Here is what I got.

Drive 0 (Master - Boot): Seagate 40GB
Drive 1 (Slave): Liteon CD-RW
Drive 2 (Master): IBM 60GXP 60GB (drive with bad sectors)
Drive 3 (Slave): IBM 60GXP 60GB (good drive)

Drive 2 is a master at the moment, but does not need to be booted from as the system boots from Drive 0.

The system is running W2k AS.

When I try to access drive 2, it give me a whirling noise for 5 mins, windows report the drive as not being accessable.

So I guess, I cannot copy the data via conventional means, I guess I have to find a sector by sector copier..

Apart from that ontrack, are there any freeware utils?

Thanks

I haven't seen any HD manufacturer recover data. In fact, when you send in the drive for RMA they say that they are not responsible for any of the
data on it. Most of the times I've RMA'd a HD I get back a different drive than the one I sent.

wonder how many people don't realize the importantce of backing up important data untill after their hard drive dies (the "It'll never happen to me" school of thought).

You might this: R-Studio for $50. I've had decent luck recovering with it..even from raid setup, but i've only done it from deletes/Win XP crash, never had to do it for bad sectors. They have a free demo that will see if the data can be recovered, but it won't actually recover it.

IBM won't recover any data. They told me that they destroy the platters (doubt that, but they might).

That actually makes some sense if they replace the platters any time a drive is RMA'd. I don't know if they actually do. But HD platters are less than $1 each, so it wouldn't be very expensive for them to do so if they are already taking the drives apart. Unless they are melting down the old platters for materials I don't see them destroying the platters for the customers sake.

If they only did that...............Yes, I did ask them and they said no it has to be done at my own cost. I didn't say that for nothing......the worst part is that one of those crappy ones had my grandpa's pix :(:(:(:(....he passed away last year.....now I know you'll say why the hell didn't I back them up? but do you backup stuff within two days of purchasing a drive????? that is why I HATE IBM....

OK, I can see why a big company like IBM won't recover data for you, but have you tried the dealer you bought it from? Since it sounds like you haven't had it long, I would think the drive would still be covered under the dealer warranty. Worth a shot I would guess.

ketchup,

My dealer has absolutely no problem in replacing the drive.......which is not the problem here. Data recovery is what I need and that is not his problem. He did give me suggestions on whom I should goto but I just can't afford it now.
