IBM GXP 60 heat....

ok...how much heat does it give off? if I have no additional cooling on it....does it fry and fail on me?....or does give off little or no heat? just wondering...because I'm receiving mine from newegg tomorrow and I want to know if I need to have my comp case open and have this huge window fan cool it...or if I can take away the fan and still have the drive run cool...

I just saw a review on the 60GXP (and others in it's class) that had heat measurements. Forgot where I saw it (try [L=]http://www.storagereview.com[/L]

From what I recall after running several hours of Bmarks, they measured temps. The 75GXP ran at something like 45C while the 60GXP was 38C or so.

If I come across it, I'll post it.

Word to the wise, when using 7200 RPM HDD highly suggest investing on a HDD cooler even with the cheapest ones. It's well worth it considering they cost less than $10.00 each. Unless, you have a full tower that's full of case fans then maybe you can skip the HDD Fan. I have a full tower case with 6 fans but I still use HDD cooler albeit they are the single fan type (cheapest). But I also have not had a HDD died on me for the last 13 years except one Quantum 2GB HDD.

I just built a system with a 60GXP in a SilentDrive enclosure. For those of you who aren't familiar with that, it's a plastic case that surrounds the HD in foam & rubber to muffle it by 90%. Needless to say that's not exactly conducive to good cooling. But it works fine. Others have used 75 GXP's in the same enclosures.

There is no need to actively cool a modern 7200 RPM HD.

w00t...thanks...I'm just a little concerned by heat...because my last drive (maxtor...5200 rpm...) died because of heat problems...

before I got my new case... I had 2 IBM 75GXP's (30gb) running side by side (about 1/8" clearance between them) in a spot in the case where there was practically no airflow. They did get pretty hot, but they did survive that abuse for about 6 months till I got my new case (and have been working in there ever since. Btw, my new case has a built-in HDD cooler, so those drives don't get any warmer than room temp now.
