IBM Embedded Security Subsystem

hope this is the right forum for this.

I am looking into getting an IBM Thinkpad (yes i know, expensive but we use them at work and they are awesome) with the IBM Embedded Security Subsystem 2.0. I was wondering if any one knows if this is turned on and my laptop is stolen, will it make it impossable to boot up or just to get my data off? Like if some one reformated it my data would be safe but they can still use my computer? Any ideas?

The embedded hardware chip Encrypts the DATA so that it is virtually
unretrievable by conventional means.

Which good if you lose the laptop, but bad if you need to retrieve
data do to a hardware issue.

BackUp as often as possible.

sounds to me like it could be a little bit risky. i dont know. i'll keep looking into it. Thanks for the input.
