IBM Drive Warranty?

Anyone heard anything about IBM no longer warranting 'bare' drives? A guy in this thread claims that IBM told him that they are no longer covering any drives except retail boxed. I know they never warrantied OEM drives, but they always have covered 'bare' drives like the ones we get from MWave/Newegg, etc.

mmm now that i read the thread. that really sucks. IBM isnt getting any more of my money.

I sent IBM an email to confirm the "false" rumor.

I have a question about your warranty.
When talking about drives, there is a
difference in a 'bare' drive and
an 'oem' drive. A bare drive is what
you would buy from Newegg, MWave,
local mom&pop shop, etc., and IBM
warranties them all for 3 years.
An 'oem' drive is one that was shipped
inside a Dell, Gateway, HP, etc.,
machine. Those drives were sold to
those manufacturers at a lower cost
with the agreement that they would
handle all warranty claims. (usually
the same as the PC warranty)

Is this still correct information?

John,

That information is correct. Periodically we have had people get OEM
drives from various resellers. The only way I can guarantee a warranty is
with the validation of the serial number on the drive. IBM will warranty
only drives that were originally purchased through distribution channels.
We cannot warranty drives that were originally purchased through OEM
channels, auctions, or computer shows.

Thank you
Tanya K.
