IBM deskstar 75gxp or maxtor udma ata 100?

i am in the prosses of building a system i have made my mind up on everything but the hd.i am putting it in the asus a7v133 mobo w/850mhz amd t-bird.what do you think i should go with?

i believe, but im not certain, that in benchmarks the deskstar edges out the maxtor by a little. but i think the maxtor is cheaper.

i have the deskstart 75gxp and love it. its fast and silent. i have to run mine on ata66 but its still great.

Both harddrives are the at the top of the crop, you can't go wrong with either. If you have the money and want nothing but the best, and you care about brand name, then I guess the IBM is your choice. If you don't care about brand name (even though Maxtor is a great brand IMHO) and would rather save your pennies, the Maxtor is for you.

Aside from the minute (and I do mean MINUTE) differences in performance and price, take into consideration the warranty policy of IBM and Maxtor. I've read of troubles with IBM, where Maxtor seems to replace all drives, OEM or retail, it doesn't matter to them.

Maxtor is just as good of a brand as IBM, recently they've been even more reliable than IBM. Look around the forum you see lots of IBM failures, but very little problems with Maxtors. In terms of performance they're very close as well.

I have 2 versions of the 75GXP, the 30gb and the 61.4gb, both work super fine. Judging by what people are saying I'd say go for the IBM drives.

One thing that is different is that the IBM uses glass platters where the Maxtor's use aluminum I believe. I thought most of the problems with the 75GXP's was because of the Windows fast shutdown not clearing the cache?

And there are problems with drives coming out of the Hungary plant. The thing is whenever something gets popular, problems always pop out of nowhere.

A vote for the Maxtor. There have been too many questions about the reliability of the IBM and Maxtor sets the industry standard for returns if needed.

Both excellent HDs, IBM is a very small tad faster , Maxtor is a bit cheaper. Youd never beable to tell the performance difference between the 2 since its so small. I use Maxtor myself, have 5 of them.

well, on the side of the ibm, if you run your computer in a common room consider silence. i own the ibm drive and it runs very silent but ive never heard the nerwer maxtor drives. an old maxtor i had was ungodly loud (but it still worked after i dropped it once) but i dont know about new ones.

if noise is concern ibm is a good choice.

but from what everyone is saying, either will do fine.
