or
WESTERN DIGITAL 40GB UATA/100 7200RPM

haha, lots of posts like this lately..
just pick one.. they are both good drives.. quiet and fast!
the WD has the slight performance edge, but costs more money, essentially making the drives very even..

performance = WD
value/performance = MAXTOR

--> I have 2 D740's and they are very fine drives, I would not hesitate to buy more of these drives.
 
I have a Maxtor 60gb 740DX, very quiet and quick.....mind you, I also have an IBM Deskstar 75GXP and fine that almost as quick and quiet, I guess i'm one of the lucky ones....If I was suspicious I would worry about saying this, thankfully I am far enough away from my pc for it not to hear 😉
