If you bought an IBM Aptiva or Thinkpad and it had the IBM MWAVE combo soundcard/modem, you might be entitled a settlement of up to $100 toward the purchase of a modem and/soundcard. I think the gist of this class action suit was promises by IBM that the modem could be upgraded in the future. Obviously this promise wasn't kept.

Go to the IBM website for further information. You might have to log in with your model number and possibly serial number (on the front of the computer.) Once you are in the Tech Support for your particular computer, you should see the settlement header.

The wife insisted I buy one of the Aptiva C55 models back in late '96 rather than build one myself. Talk about a headache. Their tech support was usless, it took then almost 2 years before they finally released the upgrade drivers for the modem that were promised at the time I bought it. I once read an article by some guru editor of a local computer rag. He said that the only computer he was never able to fix was the same model as mine. I eventually managed to get it straightened out, even upgrraded to OSR2, which at the time was unheard of. Now that I'm getting divorced, that is what the wife is using:). I'm building her a decent one, but geez, I'm a busy man.

I know two people who bought those and I replaced modems and soundcards in both systems for them. This is a nice bit of news.

I have an old P100 Aptica and it qualifies.. :)
What I get back from IBM in the settlement is worth more than that thing alone.

Trouble is, I don't know how I can prove that I got a new modem and soundcard since I have no idea where the reciept is..

I have an Aptiva 2168-M55 (P100) that uses the MWAVE card. With the latest drivers, it's fine. Took me a while to master the damn thing, but once you know what you're doing it works. My sister still uses it, & has been using it for 2 years.

I just downloaded the drivers, burned them on CD, & gave her the CD to keep with her computer. No big deal.

Certainly not worth $100.

You have until May of 2001 to purchase the modem and soundcard. Here it is from the settlement.

<< You have until May 27, 2001 to purchase a Qualifying Modem and/or Qualifying Sound Card to be eligible to receive the benefits described in Category One or Category Two. If you purchased a Qualifying Modem and/or Qualifying Sound Card prior to the date of this Notice, you are eligible to receive the benefits described in Category One or Category Two. >>

Hopefully you saved your Aptive sales receipt. Even if you didn't, you might still be eligible if you sent in the warranty card and/or registered your computer at the IBM website. Chances are if you downloaded files from IBM support, you might be registered.

If you find a modem and soundcard that have rebates, you might get the refund from IBM and the manufacturers rebate! In other words, you will get these devices less than nothing.
