IBM announces world's fastest silicon-based transistor

:Q 100GHz! :Q Wow. I wonder how long it will take for this technology to go thru the "typical trickle-down route?" I.E. NASA -> DoD -> High-end server -> Joe avg server -> High-end workstation -> Cheap Computer -> me We shall see. One other thing.

The IBM SiGe device is called a "heterojunction bipolar transistor" I've GOTTA get me some of those bad boys! Stick'em in my car's CPU or something! VROOM!

Unfortunately we will probably not see these in CPU's. The bi-polar transistors IBM has improved upon are not used in CPU's, rather communications chips. CPU's use a CMOS or complementary metal oxide semi-conductor technology, because they are more efficient than bi-polar transistors which are always on. Actually, this technology is not new. This article was presented back in March of 99'.
