IBM annouces X60

The harddrive also got a speed increase, and the laptop is using all SATA and PCI-Express interfaces now. Oh, and GMA 950 instead of 900.

Eh, whatever, I bought my X41 well before Intel's dual core mobile processors had an official name. And if the X60 uses the same design as the X41, no way would I touch one, I've been extremely disappointed in the durability of the X41, if it's indicative of all of IBM's products then they certainly don't deserve the "more durable and reliable" than Dell, or anyone else for that matter. It's also been rather crash prone. In fact, with the out of box config, it was crashing quite a bit, the system could rarely even boot up till I added an extra gigabyte of ram into it.

Still, if this system uses the same case as the X41, I wonder what the chances are that you could buy an X60 mainboard and cpu somewhere and plop it in.

Great upgrade idea. But mine is under warranty for 3 years, so I will probably not go that way, and buy another X series after this becomes too slow for my taste, and hopefully they will have a hybrid hard drive instead of this 4200 1.8 incher.

And I just tried to look at the pictures, from what I could see, since the 3d showcase thingy is not available, they have changed where the ports are. So the upgrade won't work....

Strangely, I never had any problems with my X41 in terms of stability, but I had my extra gig of RAM installed before I ever turned on the machine. I make sure to update mine frequently and love the Thinkvantage software, the backup, and the fingerprint software.
But, as I said before, most laptops come from the same manufacturers anyway, so a change in quality is very minute in most cases.

A windows button? Nice, I actually think that's one of the most useful "function" keys on a keyboard, far more so than some of the ones IBM adds on their own.
Anyhow, this new X60 has a 5400RPM harddrive, and it may even have 8MB cache.

Sucks that an upgrade isn't possible.....though what ports are you talking about? As long as USB and power are still good, I could care less about...what are the rest? IR, VGA, and SD?
Actually, looks like no upgrades beyond memory will ever be possible on the X41. Since SATA is a new standard, I doubt we'll see new larger and faster harddrives for the IDE interface the X41 uses, Intel is probably done producing new socket 479 Pentium M's, and the rest of the system definetely isn't upgradable, or at least not worth upgrading. (guess you could add a new wireless card)

Anyhow, I wish Intel had been like AMD (at least on the desktop) and made their single core motherboards fowards compatible with their dual core chips. Those tabletized programs often lag on my X41, and they'd probably benefit from dual core.

1. The x60 is a NEW chassis... it is NOT the X40/41 chassis.
2. a 3rd usb port was added to this design.
3. It now has 4 pin firewire.
4. The one they are showing at CES (I'm at CES) has a 7200rpm drive in it.

They are also showing the X60s at CES which is a sinle core 1.3GHZ - I'm assuming ULV.

T60 is also there... SWEET.

Finally firewire, that's something that should have been in the original design.
As for 7200RPM, are there even 1.8" 7200RPM harddrives, or has it moved up to a normal laptop size harddrive?

It's now 2.5"
