my friend has a ibm 75gxp 45 gb 7200rpm drive which he bought earlier this year.
he's got it hooked up to iwill kk266-r with duron 800@1000 in a full size case with 300 amd approved ps.

two nights ago... when he came over... with his computer...
the computer didn't boot up correctly.

from POST it would display some jibberish as the harddrive name. and it would not recognize the system.
so... he tells me that this has happened before and in order to fix it... he'd have to unscrew and unmount the harddrive and hold it in his hand... while booting up.

so he did...
he shut the computer down.
unscrewed the harddrive from its bay.
held it in his hand while turning the power on...
and viola...
it worked again... recognizing system boot info.

has this happened to anyone else?

what could be the potential problem?

i bet the HDD is going bad.... for some reason IBM has had a TON of trouble with the 75 GXp.. if i was him... back up most important data.. and get ready to RMA...

the only other thing i can think of is that.. it was just a freak thing..

i looked upon the possibility of the power cable and ide cable being loose...
so we changed both cables. and it still did the same thing.
unless you remove it from the computer case all together...
it will not boot properly.

isn't that weird?

almost like jamesey said...
it wants to be held and loved. :)
