IBM 75GXP vs. IBM 34GXP also WD hard drives- great prices, bad seek times....hmmm...

Well, I can get a 20.5GB IBM 34GXP drive for $75- pretty good deal! But how does it compare to it's younger but bigger brother the 75GXP?

Also, I thought that Western Digital used other companies hard drives- so what's the deal with the 15.5ms seek time? Ouch! $130 for a 30GB 7,200 RPM, ATA/100 hard drive- sweet- oh, 15.5ms seek time- ouch. 🙁 That's 6ms more than a Maxtor Diamondplus 40 drive!

If memory serves me right, the 34GXP was one of the first 7200 rpm hard drives. Also, on or about the same time I believe Western Digital came out with a hard drive based on this same IBM drive. At one point I had both and they looked and performed identically except for the sticker on top. As with all things the 75GXP is a newer and faster design which I don't thinkg Western Digital licensed this time around and probably just improved upon the 34GXP design that they licensed initially, hence the slower seek times.

Hmm...cool.

Well, the 34GXP has a 9.0ms seek time and ATA/66 which is fine for me because I don't have a mobo with ATA/100- yet. The 75GXP has a 8.5ms seek time and ATA/100. What really gets me is the "sustained data transfer rates!"

75GXP= 37MB/sec
34GXP= 22.9 to 13.8 MB/sec

Well, that explains why they came out with a new drive. 😉 The 60GXP looks pretty nice- but it's only 3MB/sec more and quieter from what I've seen. They are also impossible to find at the moment.

IBM are quality drives. Go to StorageReview to find out details on every specific drive.

I've heard bad stories about new WD drives and drive failure, particularly on the faster models. Also, I've heard horror stories about their RMA program. Unless you can get a great deal (and I did), stay away 🙂.

Overall, Maxtor seems to have cornered the high-performance IDE market. They're relatively cheap and very reliable. Worth extra money, if you ask me.

I wouldn't bother with ATA/100. A solid ATA/66 drive is plenty.

Younger Brother? The 75GXP should wipe the floor with the 34GXP.

jimmygates, it does! Younger because it is a newer drive, bigger because it is faster. 😉

I think I'm gonna pass on the 34GXP, I looked at the benchies at Storagereview and I wasn't too terribly impressed. I'll probably just wait for one of those infamous AT Hot Deals to pop up. 😛

haha...ok I understand now. 75GXP is a great drive and was going for $149 at Onvia for 45GB before X-Mas.
