Has any of you guys out there who own a IBM 75GXP 7200 HD experience any weird noises sometimes when the HD is accessed?

The first one (30Gig) I bought made a strange tick type noise (can't explain it correctly) and sometimes it would do weird stuff like sort of shutdown (as in it makes that shutdown type noise and then pauses for a second or two before resuming) in the middle of reads and writes. I have none of the power saving features on in Windows 2000 or in my BIOS so I have no idea why it would sort of power down....??

Anyway onto my seconde HD I bought last week (45Gig), again I am getting these tick noises sometimes but I haven't gotten the power down type problem as stated above.

What is that noise?? Is there something wrong with IBM's 75GXP line of HDs??

Note my computer sits about 30 cm away from me on my desk so any noise the HD makes I can hear fairly clearly.

my IBM hdds are virtually silent. perhaps you should try running drive fitness from here & see if it comes up with anything!

GS1, is what you're hearing a click - whirr type sound, almost like the drive is attempting a reboot? Is it then followed by a lock up of the drive?

I had a 22GXP that did this, and it got progressively worse over the course of about three months. Finally one day it did this six times, and the hand writing was on the wall. I replaced the drive (after speaking w/ IBM and getting a replacement from my VAR), and was able to ghost it over b4 it died.

andylawcc:

On my first IBM HD it did that and then it sort of got worse and worse. My second HD hasn't gotten to the point like the first one but then again I have only had the 2nd one for a week whereas the first one I have had for about 6 months.

bacillus:

I've ran all those IBM programs, Norton's Utilities and some other HD checkers and they all say it is fine. No bad blocks or anything, so I have no idea why it makes this noise :|

Jeff H:

My first HD sounds very similar to what you have described except my HD doesn't lock up completely, it just sort of pauses(?) for a second or 2 and then resumes whatever it was doing. My second HD just makes that click (no whirl) sound at the moment, it hasn't gotten to the stage of my first HD yet.

I am now beginning to have second thoughts about buying IBM HDs anymore even though I have read wonderful reviews / stories about them. Surely both my HDs can't be both screwed from sheer bad luck or something?

Maybe I should look for another brand of HD? Any suggestions people?

turn up your power supply just a bit and see if that helps. also check the pins on the hard drive.. or maybe sony was just going for a harley davidson type sound..?

GS1: the HD shouldn't lock or pause the OS during read/write.. I had a 30G 75GXP that I RMA back to IBM. I'll get lock up/pause during either powre up or read/write operations, the drive will generate a seeking noise.. and DFT and other testing software doesn't yield a thing.

and yes, my drive's condition is getting worse and worse. Time to backup the data and get another one while you can still do that.
