IBM 75GXP harddrive erased after clicking on zip file

Well I download a file that was in zip format. As soon as I clicked on it my computer froze. Then I turned my computer and learned that my harddrive was blank. Was this a virus that Norton didn't pick up. There is nothing wrong with the harddrive except that my files are gone. What do you think it was and do you think that I will be able to recover the data? Thanks for your help.
 
if u have win9x/me, ur fat probably got corrupted due to the restart...there are utilites to recover the fat, some are better than others...
