Hey.

Has anyone had their 75GXP drive make a few clunking noises and then stop?
No necessarily under any paticular stress... ?

I heard it might be common.. Do I need a new Drive?

BTW, this expensive drive is only 3-4 weeks old, but it'd kind of hard for me to return it, and I can't lose data.. no burner.. sigh..

I'm saying these people should pay you to use their drive. Not that they cover any recovery. Back up soon!!!!! It's ready to go..

Update: The problem I was having (posted in the other thread) was from a loose power connector.

I did try Drive Fitness Test but couldn't get it to run. IBM's site says to use a older version to test drives on a RAID controller but they dont have the old version available for download. IDIOTS!! But even after putting them on a IDE channel, I still couldn't get it to work.

If you havent already, try DFT and see if it says you have a problem.

My old Quantum 4.3 GB drive (which i still use, btw) make a small "click-shooosh" sound just before it spins down. This happens every time i turn the computer off, or when the drive isn't used for a long time (about 1 hour on my computer), and then it powers down.

So long as it doesn't make that sound while its working...

So, I talked to the place I purchased it..
They said it'd have to recreate the noise for them to trade it in for a new one.
I talked to IBM, and they said they have to return it, so I told them that and it looks like they might co-operate.
I'm going to exchange it just to be careful.
Not a cheap drive :disgust:

Speaking of clunking, my 3.1 gig western digital drive bit the dust today.
Yesterday it was all fine and dandy, and all of a sudden it made this clunk clunk clunk noise.
Today it did the same thing, so i figured i better turn my comp off so it doesnt die.
Couple hours ago i tried to boot the comp, all i heard was the dreaded clunk noise over and over again. The comp didnt even get past the scsi start up. First i thought it was my scsi card, but later i found out it was the drive.

Does western digital need a receipt to rma my drive? Cuz my 3 year warranty is up.
"Yeah thats it, i bought it 2 years ago sir.... but my dog ate the receipt" :D

I asked if I could get my HD mirrored there by them, and they haven't replied.
They'll probably charge a high price..
