With a credit card #, IBM should be able to cross ship you a new drive. It may not be 'new' it may be a refurb, but it willwork.

What a suprise , another IBM 75GXP bites the dust... Yet most people still go on and on about how great it is.

I hate refurb sh$T that these companies ship back to ya. they have defects most of the time which is not 100% fixed but they are workable. Just my 2 cents.

My 75GXP is the best, fastest drive I've ever owned. Absolutely no problems. Sorry to see that one died, certianly less than some other <unnamed> manufactuers I will not mention (I don't feel like getting flamed.. heh).

Its funny how you said it, "Anyone have experience with getting another one for free?" LOL!

It's call warranty, or RMA.

AmdEmAll, maybe thats cause there are alot more people who have them compared to the Maxtors.

I have 2 75GXP's, both working fine.
When I worked as a support guy, IBM's and Maxtors were both fine brands in terms of quality.
The only brand that really excelled in terms of high RMA rates was WD.

No problems with the 75GXP I recieved back from IBM. Kinda cool that they didn't really care if I caused the molex connector to break.. :)

Another vote for a failed 45gb 75GXP drive. I lost over 2 years of dig cam pictures! My workplace has over 25 30gb 75gxp drives and none of them have failed. Does the 45gb fail more since it has one more platter? REminder: BACK UP!

Taylorm, you should have no problem getting another one of these fine drives from IBM. Toss it in and you will probably get another 4 months out of her. From hours of research I've found that the most reliable versions of these drives were made in the Phillipines and had an IBM chipset on board. Seems like the drives made in Hungary and Thailand with mitsubishi chipsets had the highest rate of failure.
Here is a link to the IBM diagnostic wav files with sounds your drive
might make if it's crapping out on you.

I'm on my 3rd 30 GB 75GXP since September last year. The first one had these strange intermittent noises and eventually developed a sector error that could not be fixed by Scandisk or any other program. Confirmed using IBM's fitness test software. RMA'd it for a new one.

This one suffered from the same strange noises, but only during the first 5 minutes or so from a cold boot. However one day it decided it had enough and just died when I booted one day. I had actually swapped PS from an old 235W to 300W for this drive to rule it out (needed one for my Duron anyway).

This third and I hope final drive do not make any of those strange noises and have been running perfectly since I installed it. But if this drive fails it's bye bye IBM for life.

BTW, I'm confusing the seek noises with those strange noises I had on my first 2 drives. But it's just hard to put it in words. It's kind of like if you gently press your thumb against the top of a CPU fan while it's running, constantly every 10-15 seconds lasting 2-3 seconds...

AmdEmAll is right. There are more problems being reported for this line of IBM drives than for any other drive by any other manufacturer. Now, it could be that there are more out there thus more problems, but I don't think so. I have the 30GB version, which does some funky things but is still trucking along at the moment [knock on wood].

I have about a 10% failure rate on Quantum drives (approximately 250 out of 2500). I did have my 75GXP go down too, and I had some problems because they didnt type in my addy right. Finally got the drive, but havent even installed the replacement yet.
