I just installed two of these drives into my system (P3-800 CPU, Asus P3B-F 440BX mobo, Win98SE).

So far no problems but I'm wondering if I need to install the MS-Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package update. It's only been one day of testing so far and I haven't shutdown this current setup too many times.

Has anyone had any problems using this drive (or similar) on systems with fast CPU's and have NOT installed this patch? I don't want to install it if I don't have to...

Thanks,

Heiny

Alrite.. well I can't find the thread at the moment but it's somewhere and I recommend that you do install that patch otherwise you could be left doing a low-level format and reinstalling your entire system. Many people have had issues with 98/98SE/ME using cpus over 733 with the 75GXP series hard drives, (ie. data corruptions, sounds being emited from the HD) this all has to do with that 98 doesn't flush the cache of the HD fast enough before the system shuts down, the patch prolongs the shut down sequence so that all the cache can be flushed, (Windows 2K is not affected by this issue as it uses an entirely different shutdown procedure)
Overall, go install that patch before you shut down any more.

Hey Tharyn,

Thanks for the advice. I've gone ahead and installed the patch. Hopefully these drives will be as troublefree as the 22GXP has been (lots of hard use in a years time without a hickup!!!)

There has been a patch put up at Microsofts site since the other patch was made... Check Windows update. Its supposed to dump you hard drive cache before it shuts down....

LukFilm, Wuming, JJHendrix,

Like Spook mentioned, the patch is available using Windows Update or:

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

It is called: Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package. Read Tharyn's post on what can happen if you don't use this patch AND here is a link that describes the patch:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q273/0/17.asp

The potential for problems exists for Win98/ME users; Win2K systems are not effected...I patched my system the other day and other than a slight delay in shutdown (a couple extra second delay) which is what you want to happen, I haven't noticed any side effects.

Do i need the patch for Win98 First release? I download both patches from MS and micron's sites, and they both say its the incorrect version (for winSE and WinMe), but i dont see anything for win98 first release.........
