It happens to me two weeks ago, when I install WinME on my dad's PC. He's using Western Digital HD and shows the same result you had. I FDISK the partion right and the set jumper correctly. I formatted with system files and it just won't boot into it.

I have to boot from the bootable floppy into DOS. I installed the DOS CDROM drive driver and copy ME installation directory from the CD to the HD. I ran the setup from hard drive. After installtion, everything works fine. It automatically boot into the Windows. I still didn't figure why it does that. Hope that will help. Good luck. :)

You might end up installing everything. It took me two days and two night to straight this thing up. Reinstall was my last option. But after I tried Windows 2000 and Windows 98 with still the same result, that's the only option I can go. Search for Microsoft Knowledge base and see if you can find the problem.

what do you mean Microsoft Knowledge base??

For the patch for Windows, I think I am not in that case because I have never boot into the 75GXP and yet how can I get fast shutdown.

I have looked for the support or anything from Microsoft to IBM storage and still couldn't figure it out.

Pity me

Microsoft Knowledge Base is where you can find the answer for all OS and application problem. For example, if your 75GXP is not compatible with ME, they might have soultion for it. It's more like online support. It happens to me once, when my Adaptec 29160 wasn't support by Win2000. My C: hard drive was connect to the SCSI adapter and need Win2000 to recongize it. They have step shows me how to go around it.

Microsoft Knowledge Base

** EDIT ** I can't find anything related to IBM 75GXP with error message you provide. You might have to do the search else where. Good luck to you. I almost got 75GXP myself three weeks ago but end up stay what I have.

Something to try:

I always like to avoid the danger of playing with FDISK with a critical drive in as Master so I would put the 75GXP on as Primary Master, unplug the good drive, check cable orientation/jumpers, boot into the bios and make sure the bios is capable of detecting the drive properly.
If not you may need to update the bios, or hopefully not, use an overlay, save and exit, boot with a W98 startup disk (No CDROM support) run FDISK, choose Large Disk Support, blow away all partitions, make one large one for now and make sure to make it active, reboot with the floppy, run format c: /s and after that it should boot to the C: prompt.
Go back to the way you started (cable and jumper change)and try Ghost again, now that you know the drive is bootable.

How did you do the first Ghost operation?

I formatted the 75GXP before I make any partition

for the first time, i made 3 partitions and I Ghost everything into the 75GXP primary. It was not success.

For the 2nd time, I reformat it again and did not make any partition. Do the ghost and then try to make the 75gxp as master. no boot as well.

If the drive is not bootabble, there will be something like 'invalid boot system disk' or whatever...

do i get it right???

actually i don't quite familiar with Fdisk, it seems to me that I will screw it up.
I prefer Pq Magic. Isn't it do the same thing??

Just boot with a floppy drive and type fdisk /mbr

Make sure the partition is active !!!

If your old hD worked these sould also but you didn't copy the Master Boot Record so just type write it form any Win95/98/ME boot disk.

Edit: Don't even think about a Low Level Format, if you can't figure it out anyways just do a disk to disk copy with Norton Ghost and that should take care of everything but you should have the parttion sizes in the 34gxp to the 75gxp and a couple of space left. Then resize it using partion magic or something graphical in windows later on.

Warning: You should never attempt to do a low-level format on an IDE/ATA or SCSI hard disk. Do not try to use BIOS-based low-level formatting tools on these newer drives. It's unlikely that you will damage anything if you try to do this (since the drive controller is programmed to ignore any such LLF attempts), but at best you will be wasting your time.

is this real??

You know, you shouldn't be such a brat about not getting help.
I can probably guess your age.

Anyway, I'll let it slide and help anyway.

Do not low level format your hard drive, it it already low level formated from factory. Unless your hd is 10 years old, it's not necessary.

fdisk /mbr isn't going to do anything, since you said you just wiped the harddrive with all it's partitions. the "/mbr" stands for master boot record. Usually used to restore your boot record when a bootup utility(usually Linux) overwrites it and you want it back to it's microsoft form.

I do think your problem was the partition not being active(useless now if you wiped everything). I have one and it worked fine out of the box. You must set your partition to active in fdisk if you want it to boot up from there.

I don't think you need to do a LLF. Yeah it can be dangerous to use if you dont' know what you're doing.

I would try to see if you can simply install Windows etc without using Norton Ghost first. If you can successfully install and boot windows then try Ghosting the image across. If this fails I would suggest that your image is incompatible between the two hard disks.

I know this is a silly question but is it the active partition that you are transferring the image to?

Good Luck

Ok I got it run already

the Pq magic did not activate the drive for me therefore i couldn't boot from the drive

i have to do it manually thru fdisk to set it active

thanks for you time and helps

i appreciate it
