IBM 60GXP

I just ordered this drive from new egg as a refurb. I know some IBM drives have problems is this one of them. Let me know cause if it is I will cancel the order.

The IBM 75GXP was the problem line of hard drives. The 60GXP seems just about as prone to problems as any other hard drive out there (although some people might disagree) 😀

I've had a 75GXP running for almost two years now. And two 60GXP drives since September without any problems. No worries.

It's only the large capacity 75GXP's that are prone to failure... the 60GXPs are perfectly fine... in fact, IBM has been replacing 75GXPs with 60GXPs when ppl RMA them... dont worry...

I have a pair of 60GXP 40s in raid0 and no problems for 6+ months. I just ordered a 120GXP 80GB drive and I will test it out soon.

I checked out the results at StorageReview's hard drive reliabilty database (before it crashed and burned) and while the 60GXP is faring better than the 75GXP, the 60GXP still has a high rate of failure. I had a 60GXP for only a month before it died.

I bought a 60GXP last week (60GB), and yesterday it developed a 'click' when powered on and it failed to boot. The same thing just happened again a few minutes ago. Luckily it booted up after a reset but I don't think I'll take my chances. This is my first IBM (had two Maxtors, a WD, a Seagate, and a Quantum) and this is the first time I've had such a thing happen to me. Neither S.M.A.R.T. or the IBM Drive Fitness Test (that I ran yesterday) came up with anything.
