IBM 60GXP Owners: A Question

I'm just wondering, for those who are running 60GXP, does your drive make a single clicking sound when you reboot or shutdown?

I always had this sound and I'm wondering it's normal. I ONLY get this sound when I reboot or shutdown, right before power goes off the drives.

60GXP 40gig here and no clicking sounds... wish I did my research before I went out and bought an IBM HD... I see a lot of people RMA their IBM HDs... Oh well if my goes bad, there's always Maxtor and WD.

Most of the IBM HDs getting RMA'ed are from the 75GXP series... so I dont think you have much to worry about...

I also have a 40gig 60GXP, been using it for a year now and it hasnt given me any problems...

true... but I've seen cases of where the 60GXP failed a few customers but not as many as the 75GXPs did... In replacement, IBM has been shipping their new 120GXPs from RMA.

These seems to be two different views on the 60GXPs...

Some say 60GXPs are experiencing the same problems as the 75GXPs, and also have an abnormally high failure rate...

Others say IBM corrected the problem in the 60GXPs...

I dont know which version is accurate... but I havent seen many 60GXPs fail, so I am leaning towards the 2nd one... 🙂

"Clicking" sounds are never good from an IBM or any other HD. I've got two 40GB GXP's that don't make any sounds like that.

Yes, the two 60 GXPs I put in a computer I built for someone make a faint click (more of a "tick") as the HDD spins up and the heads position themselves. It appears to be normal, as both have been running fine for a long time now.

Each of my 4 60GXP's makes a light click as the computer shuts down. I suspect this is the heads parking on shut-down.

My IBM hdd's do make a sort of 'splang!' noise at times. I've been wondering what they are as well. I've got a 48GH and a 20GN.

IBM sucks. Okay, I was the guy. But I did have to warranty my 75GXP after about a month. I am scared to death it will go again.

The clicks during shutdown are normal. Clicks during accessing/seeking are not.

I'm moving away from IBM and toward WD. Haven't been in bed with WD since the Pentium 90 days when they developed the equivalent of IBM's current reputation. We've come full circle.

I have 2 western digitals (referbished because the originals crapped out on me) and they both click when shutting down... they also click when they spin back up after the computer goes to sleep and stuff like that...

I don't think you have to worry about... if it's clicking when data is transferring or being read, then I think you've got something to worry about!

Yes my dual 60GXP's make a single click when they start up normally.

Once in a while from a cold boot one of the two drives doesn't initialize properly and makes repeated clicks and isn't detected. In these cases I need to reboot and hopefully it starts up properly. I had the same happen with both of my previous 75GXP's that I RMA'd to IBM. I really think the problem has something to do with the way my A7V133 starts up in quick boot mode. As, I currently have quick boot disabled in the BIOS and haven't experienced the clicking. So this may be a fix to some who are experiencing problems with their IBM drives when booting on the A7V133 at least.

I wasn't reading your model types properly - I thought we were talking about laptop HDD's.

Having said that I have a whole stack of Ultrastar 36LPs and they are fine (and cheap).

well if it makes you feel better my 60GXP made the clicking sound couple months after buying it, so RMA and received it back 2 weeks ago. Last week it started making the clicking sound and no longer works. Can't even see it in the BIOS and the IBM Fitness Test is no good as PC can't see the thing...

Rather anoying.

Clicking sounds equal certain death in hard drives, doesn't matter if it's IBM, WD, Maxtor, Quantum, etc. If you have anything important on that drive, you should think about backing it up, or transferring it onto another drive soon. The drive will probably continue to operate normally, but it is always better to err on the side of caution. BTW, I have a 40GB IBM 60GXP 7200RPM drive, and it works great! No clicking sounds at all. In fact, I've never even heard a peep from this drive. It's really very quiet.

Yes I do get a clicking sound every so often when I reboot. I think its the heads resetting themselves. Of course, now I get that clicking sound every half hour or so.. 🙁 (replacement on its way luckily)

I get a clicking sound when shutting down or restarting, it's normal though, it's always happened.

my drives are 2 Maxtor and 1 non-Maxtor Quantum Fireball plus LM.

I think I should have been more careful with my description 🙂

I believe most of the 75GXP/60GXP problems occur when constant clicking sounds happen during seek/read/write.

My story is a little different. I get a SINGLE, click sound when rebooting or shutting down. Reading the general concensus(sp) here, it looks like it's the heads resetting themselves. Thats all I wanted to know 🙂

Thank you so much all.
