in my opinion, i say neither. My 2nd IBM 75GXP 75GB broke down last week, and i dont think the Seagate ATA 4's are even out yet... I'd say stick with Diamond or WD

They are out
linky
only $154 not bad

Also From what I hear the 60gxp does not have the problems that the 75gxp had...

Both are a good choice!:) I'm running several 60GXP's and still several 75GXP's which are well over a year old now without any problems! I just received a Seagate and it seems very nice too. Very fast......very quiet! Actually, the only HD's I ever have problems with are WD's........Maxtors seem to be quite reliable also IMHO!;):)

Quoted seek times on spec sheets are a useless stat. Especially when Seagate IDE drives are involved. The Barracuda III had a 8.9ms quoted seek time, but a tested access time of 15.4ms resulted in a real world 11.2ms seek time which is no where near the spec sheet. Trying to predict how the Barracuda IV performs is a waste of time. Just wait until someone gets a drive and is able to test it.

I just built 2 systems the past week. One with the IBM 60GXP and the other with the Seagate Barracuda IV.

The IBM is extremely quiet, but nothing like the Seagate. I have 'silent' fans and HSF in both computers and it's impossible to hear the Seagate except during very, very heavy seeks. And even at that, it's barely perceivable. The only way to tell if the Seagate was working was to check the HD LED.

Unfortunately, I only ran HDTach on the Seagate which brought in an average transfer speed of 30MB/sec on Win2K SP1 with no VIA 4 in 1 drivers. (I have an Appollo Pro Chipset for P3.) Just as a comparison, my Quantum Fireball LM brought in an average speed of around 23MB/sec. Both these numbers seem kind of low to me, but it could be the older chipset and not the latest .inf files. (I'm still in the process of updating my system so I'll post the new numbers later with the latest drivers. But no 60GXP since I had given that to someone else.)

I can't compare usage since the IBM when into an Athlon 1.2 GHz and the Seagate into a P3-733. But when I build the next system for someone, I'll be sure to put in the Barracuda into them. It just seemd slightly more responsive (faster seeks?) and of couse, virtually silent.

Also, I did a touch test on the hard drives to check the temps. They were both warm to the touch but nothing that I would be concerned about. I couldn't really tell the difference between the two, but they were both warmer than the Fireball LM.

As being the new owner of an IBM 60GXP 60 gig. I say go for this one.

1) It is very very quiet
2) I can't even hear it seeking.
3) I can't even hear it transfering data
4) I even thought it was RMA, when I 1st booted up.
I had to stop my CPU fans to hear it properly.

Go for this drive, you will not be disappointed.!!!

Cheers
