What I did to get this to stop was replace the ide cable, seems to have fixed the problem. I have recently seen a post on this forum where someone had left a link to the noises that hard drives make when they are about to go, seems to have been one of these noises, thing is I replaced the cable and all seems well. What would you do? I really wish that I did not have to RMA this drive! ps. I bought this drive way before these drives were labled "Deathstar"

Well we wish you didn't have to RMA it either but it's better to do it while you can get your data off it then after.

If you bought it well before then it may not be under warranty still. Better to RMA it while you still can, maybe you'll get a Hitachi in return?

That'd be my thought and it has done OK to last this long...I guess that's why most HD manufactures either went, broke, sold out, and the ones that are here are going to 1yr warranty's on their regular drives (to many RMA's).

Actually it was the 75GXP modles that were labled deathstar. 60gxps are newer than 75gxps. I own a 60GXP myself with no problems.

yea but, can you guys leave some feedback on the issue of the cable fixing it or was it just a fluke? Also whats some good freeware that works under XP pro to test speed of the drive, I am currently using SiSoftware Sandra 2003.

You probably moved or bumped the drive enough removing/reinserting the IDE cable that it temporarily "fixed" the squeaking noise. It also could possibly have been a loose screw or rail that the hard drive was attached to that was causing the squeaking. Doubtful, but possible. Signs and intuition point towards a failing drive. Try running some of the IBM hard drive testing tools on the drive. Maybe it has a SMART error that could tell you want's going bad with it?

no it has no smart error, but maybe it does where would I look to see that? I did have smartdrive enabled!

Best to download the IBM drive fitness tools from their website to confirm there isn't an error with the drive.
