My 40 gigger failed in 3 months. Liked how quiet the drive was, but can't help but wonder about the quality of these drives. Replaced it with a Western Digital. Once bitten, twice shy.

if you talk to enough people you will discover that every hard drive manufacture have a percentage that fail. Luckily my gxp60 is still doing well agfter 4-5 months of use :)

And my 45GB 75GXP (supposedly the worst of the lot) is still going fine after at least a year of use.

I think the troubles are caused bya combination of FSB overclocking and bad cooling.

Not so! When I had my 75GXP, I never overclocked my FSB, and my cooling setup isn't terrible and my drive failed 3 months after I bought it with the same problem everyone else reports. I woulden't be surprised if your 75GXP fails very soon.

My 75GXP 45GB came up with a "bad sectors" error about 1 month ago. I bought a Seagate 40 GB to replace it, used the IBM Drive Fitness Tools "erase disk", it's been running fine since then. Needless to say, it's being used in a non-critical machine, "just in case".

I just wanted to let you know that my 75GXP had that problem. I did the low level format, it was fine for a month, then the same thing happened again. Good Idea to use it in a non critical machine. I RMAed mine, they sent me a 75GB 75GXP refurb (which is now sitting on my dresser unused BTW ;) ) and I bought a 100GB WD drive to replace it. I'm super happy with the WD drive.

I still have several 75GXP's running (knock on wood) a few 60GXP's and just recently got my secong 120GXP! All are running great, fast, and quiet and I have no complaints!:) I know all about the 75GXP nightmare and have heard of some 60GXP's also failing, but, you can't knock them if there's not a problem! I also run a few Maxtors which I fell are good drives, but, in my expierience, I have terrible luck with WD's...............I had one fail recently and is in RMA proccess and earlier last year had 2 fail in a months time!

I guess there are good and bad of every make and model but, my past expierience shows no problems with IBM's whatsoever!:)

My 40GB 60GXP that I bought last June has a few bad sectors, but I've been able to work around them so far. <knock on wood> Hopefully it won't develop to the point that I have to RMA the drive.

<<Once bitten, twice shy.>>
Kinda OT, but I've never really understood that saying. I know Savage Garden had it in one of their songs, but it just doesn't seem to make too much sense to me. I always used to think it was, "Once bitter, twice shy," which to me would make more sense.

It's great to hear that many of you have had good luck with your IBM drives, but I felt it necesary to post my experience with the 60GXP. I thought that the 75GXP line was the only "problem" line of drives. However, reading other posts, I'm not so sure.

I have a 45gb 75gxp for almost a year with no problem, but the drive is hardly accessed just using it for storage of old files.

I know sharkyexteme recommended the 40gig IBM 60 GXP for their value gaming system for a long time, but just this past month they switched to a Matrox I believe. Apparently there are some issues that have come up with the IBM 60 GXP, but I don't know what they are.

I swear by IBM. Never had a problem. Had a Western digital. Lucky to recover my info off it. They did send me a new one though. Ford or Chevy anyone?

GamePC dropped IBM drives altogether including the 60GXP series due to excessive return rates. They won't stock the 120GXPs until they prove reliable over the long haul. I imagine other vendors are doing the same. IBM made a stink, no doubt about it.
