Call them. This happended to me and they took $30 off from my final price, they said somehow the coupon doesn't work. So the total was $155 (including CA tax and $1.95 second day air shipping).

Thanks Souka,

There are few gentle-men/persons here on this thread, not just flamers and bashers.

NCTiger, I re-read the previous posts and I didn't see anybody flaming or bashing you. Everybody posted that this is a good price for an IBM drive and that the IBM drive is better. It's kind of like asking why is $12,000 for a Honda Civic EX a good deal when a Daewoo is $10,000. I'm not trying to flame or bash here, just trying to clear things up.

For people looking for the coupons, the coupon that is expiring today 12/15 didn't work for me yesturday. Try the one expiring 12/31. I got mine from techbargains.

i concur with the above post.

we are all here for the BEST deal. we're not flaming anyone. we're just presenting other options.

i mean, why would koolio pay slightly over $150 for the drive if you can get it for less than $150 at onvia. (unless it's for the 2nd day shipping) you have to remember, people have different circumstances (i.e. CA ppl have to pay tax at Buy.com but not Onvia)

don't take anything personal here. we're all watching out for each other. (well at least i am trying to :))

anyone know any other great deals on 40+ gig 7200 drives? I recently discovered (to my horror) that this single IBM 45GB ATA/100 7200 RPM drive beats my two 20 gig 5400rpm RAID but to be fair one of the drives, the fujitsu, is slowing down the raid with a 17ms access time! any slower and it'd be a CD-ROM :)

Anyway, this i just can not handle, I can't have my RAID being smoked so bad! So I must buy two more drives. That $93 Maxtor deal was excellent, any way to get in on similar deals?

yes i know this belongs in the ~~~IWANNA~~~ thread but no one reads those :)

I'm waiting for the new 60GXP that are supposed to be shipping this month and will have 20GB per platter and I think are the quietist drives on the market. This is a good price though, and if the new ones weren't coming out now, I would have picked up 2 from Onvia...

Maxtor is typically cheaper than the other drives but I dont think that it as good as the rest. This is a great deal however. I'm not sure if I should buy a Western Digital 30GB ATA 100 7200 for $110. I get 15GB less but also $30 less. Anyone know what the buffer is one this one? 2Mb I assume.

OK I just ordered mine!! I had to call because I got an error. Thanks for the help above, Koolio. They told me they are having problems with their coupons so you have to call, no way around it. She was super nice for a customer service person. No Shipping or tax for me!! Thanks everyone.

rabidsloth: whatcha getting in sandra 2001 drive benchmark? just curious, i was talking with someone on another forum and it seems my twin 20gig 5400 drives RAID are slower than a single IBM Deskstar 7200rpm drives so I'm wondering what Deskstar RAID would be like.

one of the drives is a fujitsu which is slowing the other down with it's 17ms (yes, 17) access time (any slower and it'd be a cd-rom!!) according to storagereview.com

Whoa!!! I just found out the difference between the two different models. One has 2MG of cache, the other doesn't!! BIG difference!!! I just called and cancelled my cheaper order and got the model#07n5640 for 184.95 - 30.00 coupon you must mention. This one is supposed to be much faster because of the cache difference. Watch out for this. I wanted you all to know before you order or you can try to cancel and re-order.

onvia has model #07N5640 for $150. OEM

it seems like model #07N3931 has 2mb of cache too.
PcConnection from ibm.com the specs on that page has 2mb cache. the model # perhaps refers to when they were made, i never heard of 75gcp HD's with no cache or less then 2mb.

One of the computer teachers at my school asked me which model because one has 2mg and the other has 512k (I guess). He said to go out to Ibm website and see, which I didn't do. Under buy.com it said cache/none - I'm sure someone just didn't fill it in - couldn't have none! Anyone know for sure?

Hmm, according to IBM's web page...both those model numbers yield the same specs, both having 2 meg cache. Buy.com's site is the only place that lists one of them as not. I cancelled my buy.com and went with onvia just in case. However, I'm inclined to believe buy.com might have made a mistake and all models have 2 meg cache...*shrug*...

ibm site seems to suggest that all 75GXP drives have 2MB cache. Don't know about the 512k business. I'll get it monday, so I'll have to wait and see.

TGirl, where did you find that the drive has no cache?

Search by part number for each of 07N5216, 07N5640, 07N4775

Can you see what the difference between the drives is?
I think it is in the warranty. The first one sends you to the vendor, while the second two send you to the IBM warranty pages.

My guess is that the first part is a true OEM (Gateway?).
The second one is a generic OEM package or white-box or better no-box drive. The third one is the retail box.

If anybody has received one of these drives, you can check the warranty at

I bought the 45 Gig hard drive from Buy.com last week. It was the cheapest version of the Deskstar 75GXP (at the time $177.95) part number 07N3931 and the drive I actually received was model no. DTLA-307045. I just went to the IBM website and this is the only model number I can find for the 75GXP 45 gb version. It lists this in a table for the 75GXP where is specifically says 2mb buffer.

The model number is the same for all 45MB/75GXP. The part number changes. Look at the serial number in the drive and go with partnumber and serial number to check your warranty status using the link in previous append. Looking at your P/N it seems to point to IBM warranty.

OK everyone,

I called IBM tech support and asked about the 3 models listed above. Here's what he told me: All will have 2mg, the difference is oem, whether it has a cable included or not, along with an instruction booklet, jumpers, hardware, etc.

07N5216 - OEM made specifically for Gateway. He suggested we stay away from that model because you will have a hard time getting either them or Gateway to honor it.

07n5640 - (One I ended up getting) this is oem, but standard. has no cables or hardware but they will send you the screws if you need them. Has a 3 year warranty. No booklet. Does have jumpers. No cable!! CRAP!

07n4775 - Retail version, comes with everything including a cable. Same warranty applies.

The original one I ordered I didn't ask about, (thought it was one of the 3 I was asking about), so I'm not sure what that one is at least we know it has the 2mg, but cables - I don't know.
Any one who has one, let us know (07n3931).

Thanks

TGirl
