IBM 120 GXP series vs WD1200JB HD Review! WD1200JB in Raid 0 Review! And here a new IDE HD with 16mb of cache!

Yep i know that but they have not benchmarked the IBM 120 gxp series HD or a HD review with the WD1200JB vs the IBM 120 gxp series.

That new Toshiba drive looks very interesting. IBM may finally have some competition in the mobile storage arena. Considering how dirt slow laptop drives are, this is a welcomed announcement.

RAID results are rather odd though. Doesn't make any sense that ATA133 SW would perform that much poorer than ATA100 SW in 2 of the tests. Conversely, it doesn't really make any sense that ATA133 outperforms ATA100 in the other 2 by a large margin, as the WD drive is an ATA100 drive. As such, the controller should detect the drive at boot, and automatically drop itself to ATA100 speeds. The results should be pretty much mirror image results for ATA100 and ATA133. The differences most likely can be attributed to using different IDE controllers with different performance characteristics considering the same RAID software was used for each eliminating that variable. The margin of difference between the 2 both ways is still rather odd. For this reason, the graphs should not be labeled as if they are a comparison of ATA standards because they really aren't.

Just to add. SR is going to continue on as a one man show. It's not going to close for the forseeable future.

16 mb of cache yooooowzer...I have had the pleasure of installing a couple of the WD spcial edition 8 mb Hd's and they really scream.....must resist....must resist....must resist 😉

Ausm

It's a 5400RPM 2.5" laptop drive Ausm, not something you would want to install in a desktop. The WD is much faster.

I wish WD made a smaller, less expensive model of the 8 MB cache drive. I don't need a 100-120 GB drive, 60 will do. At least with the 120GXP, you can get a smaller version for a pretty cheap price. If I ever see a hot deal on the WD, I'd love to pick one up.

Datadrive4all.com has the 1200JB For 242$ which is still expensive, but worth it IMO 😉

I am ordering as soon as TAXES come back 😛

Yeah, I know its a sweet drive, but $242 is more than I want to spend on a drive. I have a 60 gig 60GXP that isn't even 1/2 full as it is.

Yeah but with a 120 gig WD with 8 mb of cache HD the HD will be faster when you have 40 gigs filled up on it than a 45 or a 60 gig with 40 gigs filled up on it. So i think thats somewhat of a advance. I mean if i got the WD1200JB with 8 mb of cache i would only use 10 to 50 gigs i am sure. If even that lol. But at least it will be a lot faster than just having a 60 gig and filling it up to 50 gigs. Because if you imagined the WD1200JB with 8 mb of cache was only like a 45 or 60 gig HD and never used over that then you would have one fast HD!!! But that sorta defeats the purpose i know for having the 120 gigs but thats one way to have a faster IDE HD. Like you could partition it even to only 45 to 60 gigs and then leave the rest unformated lol. I am sure the end transfer rate would be a lot higher than any other HD but i know thats cheating but i look at it like that because it can give you a advance if you wanted speed.

GoodRevrnd no thats the WD 1000JB with 8 mb of cache (bare drive) for $219. The WD1200JB with 8 mb of cache (bare drive) is $255.

Whoops!! My bad. Though I'd still get it from MWave since I can just walk in and pick it up, no shipping fees/waiting. =p
