Yo,
Am I the only one that thinks (Sir) Ian McKellan should have won an Oscar for his portrayal of Gandalf?

As sometimes happens, actors and actresses win an Oscar late in life as a quasi-cumulative award for past performances. For example, Henry Fonda winning Best Actor for "On Golden Pond." While each year there are certainly other actors worthy (Jack Nicholson, Adrian Brody, Sean Penn, et al).

Since McKellan is quite up there in years, suprised the Academy hasn't honored him.

Have a good one,

The lord of the rings has no main actor or actress. In fact with so many characters, you cannot even pick out one person as a supporting actor or actress. Gandalf had so few lines and was on screen for such a short time, the part really isn't big enough to consider.

That said, of all actors on the LOTR movies, I was least convinced that Ian McKellan was truely what he was supposed to be - a wizzard.

McKellan, though a fantastic actor, was hardly a standout in any of the LOTR films. No real emotion shown past a mischievious smile or two, no great oratories. If I had to pick the best actor in the LOTR series, it would be the the actor who played Thoeden, King of Rohan.

He really didn't have to do much, besides let the special effect make him look good. Its not that he didn't do well at the part, it just wasn't a very hard part to play.

He should hop films over to Harry Potter just to beat that snivelling little Luke Skywalker ripoff into a fine magical powder.

Were you expecting a Dungeons and Dragons wizard?

No in the LOTR wizards really don't cast spells and do other things like a D&D wizard. My comment is that throughout the movie(s) I had the feeling that he looked like a man dressed up for Halloween reading off a script. It just didn't appear like he was real.
