Hi all
This is a new system consisting of a Epox 8K9A7I mobo, AMD XP 2600+ cpu, 512 meg of tested ram, SB Live sound card,GF4 video card, external USB usb modem and a Belkin self powered usb hub.
The latest drivers were downloaded from the Epox site and installed as the disk that came with the mobo was unusable.
The system started up just fine and everything seemed OK. The Bios was in Fail-Safe default so no overclocking or fast settings were involved.
I went on the internet to download the microsoft stuff and in a few minutes the internet connection was dropped. Further investigation showed that the modem and Belkin hub were not powered up. I reset the system and everything powered up OK so I went back on line to finish the download. All was well for about a half hour then down go the hub and modem.
I have tried it with and without the hub, different usb ports, with and without the usb2 drivers, with and without the Via usb filter patch and the results are always the same. The only varible is the time before usb failure.
I downloaded and flashed the latest bios, tried two different power supplys and ran the system in and out of the case. Same results. The problem only shows up with the Hub or modem on the usb ports. Joystick and card readers are no problem. ANY IDEAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THANKS FOR READING GEC

If it works fine without the hub and the modem, one of those has to be your problem. Have you tried it with just the modem on the back usb ports? I imagine you are just running into a power problem of some kind with too many devices. Have you tried it with a powered hub? Have you checked device manager to see how much power is being used by each device?

Yes I have tried the modem alone on every usb port. Heres a odd bit of info, I borrowed a USR pci modem and it would get knocked off line just like the usb USR modem. Thinking it might be a USR problem, I bought a cheap pci modem and everything works OK. No drop outs or usb failure. I have used USR modems for years with no problems but this has really stumped me. Any ideas on where I can find out any modem info to guide me in my next purchase?

That certainly is a weird problem, never heard of anything like that before. Good to hear you got it working. As for a new modem, I would check out newegg, they have a good selection of pci modems and some customer reviews.
