i9900 giving me trouble

I just ordered a bunch of ink to put into my Canon i9900. I open the top to switch them out and the carriage moves to the center, pauses, goes back and forth, pauses, keeps doing this. Not sure why it doesn't just move to the center and stay put.

While it is doing this I am switching out the cartridges on the pause. It moved on me one time and the ink tank wasn't fully in and so it hit the side of the printer housing and made the carriage or gearing make a grinding noise.

I finally get them all in there and close the lid, but now the orange light is blinking 5 times. From researching this it means there is an error with the printhead. I take it out, put it back in, same thing. I wash it really good, let it dry, put it back in and still the 5 light error. I'm at a loss as to what to do now. It was working beforehand, so maybe the ink cartridge catching messed something up? Why does the carriage constantly move back and forth instead of staying still?

I like the printer and it was somewhat expensive so I don't want to get another, and I have $90 worth of brand new ink. So frustrating. I've been having all sorts of computer problems lately. :(

I also have an i9900: the print head should have parked itself when you opened the access panel to change cartridges. So, there was a problem even before the collision event. The worst case is that the logic board has failed: they're no longer available, so you'll have to find a used one somewhere or be SOL. Replacement print heads are easier to come by, but you'll pay about $100 USD. Unfortunately, I don't know how to determine if it's the board or the head that needs replacing.
