My old Q6600 @ 3.2ghz just couldn't handle 5d mk2's H.264 40mbps video files.
I upgraded to i7 860 @ 3.7 ghz and the result is simply amazing.

Below is a very simple benchmark I just ran:

Preview:
Q6600 - 12-14fps which makes editing very annoying and close to impossible.
i7 860 - 30fps

Rendering time:
Q6600 - 32min 14 sec.
i7 860 - 12min 30sec.

This is good!

meh i hate editing on my Opteron 170!!! LOL My Macbook Pro's C2D 2.4ghz feels like heaven compared to my Opty although the HD wil boggle down so I can't multitask as heavily when editing.

I will look for an i7 sometime after christmas then. This will definitely up my editing speed and even photoshop will improve by leaps and bounds I'm sure.

I'm guessing he's using Adobe Premier. It's a hog like most Adobe products.

50% of editing is actual editing. The other 50% is watching bars move across a screen. ;D

I use Sony Vegas. Compared to Premiere, I find it to be very straightforward.
At first, I tried to use Permiere because some plug-ins(MagicBullet stuffs) do not support Vegas 64bit, but I just couldn't figure it out.
I finally gave up and moved to Vegas for its very easy to use. I only use Premiere for those plug-ins and now that I just installed 32bit version of Vegas, I might not use it at all.

One more thing:
Premiere preview plays fine only after a while. If I play it from the beginning, it plays everything perfectly. If I play it from anywhere in the timeline, all the 8 threads (4 core + 4 HT) would get loaded and there're several seconds of initial lag.
However, this does not happen when I'm working on original files of 5D mk2; it only happens when I'm working on h.264 mp4 files Vegas generated.

Vegas is generally thought to be a good prosumer PC editor. I use Final Cut Express myself. Occasionally FCP. I'm working on a 15min student doc right now with it.

Premier Pro is a vary slow editor. Nobody uses it in the real world anymore. It's all Avid or FCP. Like most Adobe products, PP is a huge resource hog.

I am still holding out on the hope that the NextGen Liquid is going to come out. Avid Liquid will do 1080i HDV preview with effects with a LGA 2.1 dual core and an ATI 1950 Pro in real time. The FAST group (now Pinnacle again) in Germany and the Cali group (Liquid and Studio) are working on a DX10 GPU rewrite from what rumours that have been heard. And the guys with i7's and DX10 cards are really happy with the old code. i7 is smoking for about everything that I have seen and heard, even Media Composer.

ugh. It seems just yesterday I built my 8400 Wofldale rig. It seems so fast still. I'm sure the 7D will change my mind about that.
