Looking at getting a new laptop for gaming (planning for ES:Skyrim, currently wow, fallen earth, Civ V. Most of the 17in customs are standard with the i7 2630. Will probably get the nvidia gtx 540M. Are the upgrades to i7 2730, 2830 or 2930. worth the money?

Excellent question. From what I have read from other readers on Notebookreview.com forums the upgrade from 2630 to 2730 is worth it but not the 2830. Waste of money.

Where do you plan on purchasing from and what is your budget?

He means 2720 btw ^^

Btw you should post about what you are looking for in a notebook and we could make some suggestions.

Right off the top of my head here are some suggestions:

Dell XPS 17
HP Envy 17
HP Pavillion dv7t
Sager NP8170

Since this is mainly a gaming laptop, a higher performing GPU would be a lot more important than upgrading the CPU.

Looking at the 17" Sager NP8170 or ASUS G74SX - A2 prob from Xotic or Powernotebooks. I think I will be going for about $2400. I would really like to drop the weight to about 7-8 lbs because my Sager NP9262 is 12 lbs and just too heavy to drag back and forth to work everyday or on trips.
I think the gtx 560M with 3Gb on the asus or 1.5 on the sager (looking at the options on both sites)
Although, you might be able to get cheaper Ram aftermarket, I might just get the 16Gb installed rather than having to crack it open right out of the box.
Prob get the matte screen upgrade because my NP9262 is really glarey which makes it difficult in to much light.
As for HD - Solid State 160 or 120gb and a 750gb 7200 rpm
Prob wont use a blueray drive, but is it possible they might start releasing games on blueray?

If anything games will start to move to digital downloads only.

You have two decent choices. You could get either notebook for 1600 or so. 2400 is overdoing it anyways.
