I realize that this thread is titled i7 920 but I thought some might be interested in i7 940 output.

The computer is using Ubuntu 8.04 and running @ stock with the -smp 8 flag and HT on

:shocked::shocked:

Running my i7 @ 3.8GHz with HT and -smp 8 flag

So far I've only had 2671 WUs. It does between 10100 and 10200ppd. Avg. Frame time of 2min 43sec

no stock speed results, sorry

For reference, here's my rigs (all @3.24GHz, Q6600) ubuntu 8.04 linux

FYI, if you upgrade to the latest linux distros, ppd on SMP WUs will drop 20% or so.

No one understands why though!😉

I get anywhere from 6500 to 12500 PPD, with three 9600GSOs in this machine.
Let's compare the cost/PPD, between an i7 machine and a quad-GPU machine.

For my rig:
CPU $40
RAM $20
mobo $150
video cards 4x$60
case $40
PSU $70
PSU splitters $15
fans $30
HD $70 (don't really need a 6400AAKS for a folding box, but what the heck)
DVD $25

total $700

How much did the i7 rig cost?

The i7 rigs are definitely very expensive. I'll price one out with 2 GTX+ cards.

My Q6600s + one 9800GTX+ are getting from 9500-11,500 ppd on linux. The down side is you have to run the GPU client under wine (not easy to set up but is very stable).

All prices from Newegg:

GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD3R LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard ----- $210
Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz ----- $295
Crucial 3GB (3 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory--$95
2 x ASUS EN9800GTX+ DK/HTDI/512M GeForce 9800 GTX+ --$320
CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V ----$100
Tuniq Tower 120---$50
Antec 900 case (comes with fans)--- $109
HDD---$70
DVD--$25

Total----$1374

Assuming the i7 920 will overclock to 3.8 GHz, you may get 17-19K ppd on this beast.

Whilst it might not win the bang/buck comparision it's interesting to see the i7 being massively faster in another DC project 🙂.

In my i7 DPAD thread you can see that the i7 920 (in Turbo mode at 2.8GHz, HT on) is ~1/3 faster than a Q9300 @3.37 GHz! :Q😎

Good point, although I'd imagine if you overclocked it those savings would vanish, albeit at a big jump in output 😀.
