Im about to build a new pc with the core i7 920, everything will be new. Currently I have been using Pentium D CPU.

Could somebody give me an example on how much faster my new build would be, i know it will be a huge difference, i would just like an example

Pentium D + 2GB Ram --> Core i7 920 + 6GB Ram

Depends what you use it for. As long as its not a disk load limited procedure, then you will see a major improvement. But if you are just surfing and loading desktop applications, then a pretty negligible difference. I use Pentium Ds at work and they're plenty fast for basic desktop use.

YES, its that much faster than a Pentium D (just about the worst proc Intel ever made)

Pentium D was faster than the fastest Pentium ever made, does that make Pentium worse?

Pentium D was not great for performance/watt but it was good for performance/cost metrics...don't you remember how sky-high (it was like i7 is now) the X2 was priced when it came out?

I badly wanted an X2 with its fancy IMC and 64bit capabilities, took one look at the price/performance and opted to by me a ~1.5core P4 (northwood with HT).

That's great! I am mainly going to be gaming and surfing a lot, and I usually need to open multiple tabs and multitask at times. I also download quite big files so I need to decompress them without waiting forever.

That depends on what the rest of the i7 eq is.

If your running old hardware and recycling it off the P4-D id hoenstly say you wouldnt notice some of the difference.

Encoding yeah, it will be a ton faster, but gaming... i think ud still be limited on your gpu sector.

So to answer your question, we would need a complete list of the hardware on your i7 machine proposed and the current hardware on the P4D.

Of course theres a zone called the ignorance zone, which i always fall into... basically it means (cuz of ignorance) if its more expensive it has to be faster right?

Powerleap has an 1366 to 775 converter? (you did say use old hardware hehe!) Frankly it would not surprise me!

Pentium D is to Phenom Triple Core as cross country is to TriAthlon. :laugh:

Depending on what else is in your system it could be walking is to throwing darts - we just don't know. One thing's for sure it will be faster.

Here are some more specific specs

The only thing i see that won't be a huge upgrade over what you used to have would be going from an 9800GT to an 8800GTX. A GTX 260 or 275 would be a much better upgrade........but then again only if you like to game on your pc.

9800GT to an 8800GTX should be negligible difference, I think the GTX only has 3% more shader power? For older games and higher res it will start to distance itself but...yeah a 260 or 275 would be a huge upgrade. Unless you have ZERO interest in new games and you're playing 2004 games then I guess the 8800GTX is a good idea if its cheap, since GT200 doesn't really push a whole lot more pixels (I believe the 260 pushes about 10% more than the 8800GTX).

I did not spend a penny on the 8800 GTX. My cousin had it and he did not need it so I just got it for free. And I know 8800 GTX has more memory and speed, and its already factory overclocked, so might as well use it.
