i7 flex when installed in mobo?

Hey Guys,

I'm pretty sure when I mount the i7 into the mobo, the two tabs that hold the cpu in place is causing the chip to flex. I tested this by running heatsink goo (very thin layer) over the cpu and pressed the heatsink in place - only the edges of the cpu made contact with the heatsink. If I dismounted the cpu from the mobo, it was flush when I pressed it on the heatsink. Hmm...

I have a gigabyte x58-ud3r and a scythe mugen 2 heatsink. The install instructions for the heatsink had me disassemble the cpu backplate and replace it with the scythe - that all went fine. The instructions for the scythe say there are washers under the cpu mount (top side of the mobo). If there are, I have lost them - can anyone confirm this?

Anyway, I have idle temps (stock clockrate) of 36-40 and ~60 when using prime95. I'm pretty sure this is due to cpu flex. I applied a small line of artic silver to the i7 as the instructions said - so that should be fine.

Is it possible the cpu heat shield is flexing causing a bad connection with the heatsink? Any thoughts?

Thanks!

If it does flex, lapping it was pretty useless

if your cpu itself is flexing, there is something wrong with it lol

Since a picture tells more words then I can, here is what I'm talking about

http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/632/screenshot1flk.png

those 4 washers circled in red were either missing from my mobo, or they got lost :/ Does your I7 motherboards have those washers there? If so, how thick are they? I have searched for the washers, but I can't find them :/

But man, when the i7 is clamped down, it's tight!

I wish I had another i7 mobo to compare it too!

Thanks for any insight! :)
