Hey all, long time reader, first time poster!
So I've been through the general "system builder's post" and came up with a general setup that I'm doing for my brother.

1. PC will be used for everyday non demanding program works and frequent gaming.

2. Budget is at most $2500-3000, but I wouldn't want to spend more than what I need to.

3. Parts will be purchased from USA.

4. I'm personally closet AMD fanboy (still running on athlon 64 3200+ baby), but will be getting Intel setup and moving on myself ;)
Other brands, probably nVidia, Seagate... doesn't matter, whatever the better product is now.

5. No current parts. He is coming from an old laptop. THIS WILL BE FRESH BUILD!

6. Yes I have searched and researched.

7. Light Overclocking? I will be taking suggestions.

Summary:
Basically, this is a fresh build from nothing. It just needs to perform your typical internet surfing and word processing or whatever. However, this rig also needs to be game friendly at a pretty good setting. I thought about going through the C2D or C2Q setup, but I'm reading that if this is a fresh build, mind as well go for the i7.

CPU: Intel Core i7 920
Seems like I don't have much choice in this category.

Heatsink: Cooler Master V8 (RR-UV8-XBU1-GP)
Seems to have good reviews?

Motherboard: ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX
Seems to be the popular choice.

Memory OCZ Platinum 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
Right off the System Build list.

Power Supply Corsair Memory CMPSU-650TX

Case Cooler Master Stacker 830 Evolution
Honestly, I'm not sure which case to get. Looks wise, this or Cosmos 1000 are appealing. So if there are other cases that are better with similar aesthetics, feel free to recommend.

Primary HD Western Digital VelociRaptor WD3000HLFS 300GB 10000 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb
Secondary HD Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb
-not sure if we'll need to do any RAID setup

Primary Optical LG GH22NS30

Video Card BFG Tech BFGEGTX2851024OCXE
-been out of touch with the vid card marathon. Seems like ati has caught up to a certain degree, so I'm not sure if this is the right choice. He'll be playing games like Fallout 3 and such and it doesn't have to run at MAXIMUM setting possible. Just a pretty darn good setting. Would he need SLi setup or just a single card will do?

Then there are your usual extra fans for the case, thermal, blah blah blah.
Let me know if I need to provide you guys with more information!

Also, I welcome any suggestions on trimming the cost anywhere. If there are any parts where its performance isn't worth the price and have a substitution in mind, let me know.

Thanks in advance!!

The Cosmos 1000 is only $139 at NewEgg.

You can get the Asus P6T non-deluxe version. From my reading, biggest change is 16+2 phase design to 8.
http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/...w2LCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA== Here is a more review of the non-deluxe

You lose a feature like Express Gate but who really uses that?

Try to buy things that are on sale from deals website.. You can get top notch equipment. My whole setup similar to yours only cost around $1200 without a monitor.

See my thread
My I7 build

Its very close to what you want

yea, probably will toss the velocirapter HD. I don't think he needs the premium.
Cosmos seems like a good case as well, but I'm reading that it probably needs some kind of HD slot/fan to cool them down? I'll def look into it.
Motherboard, if the difference is ever so slight such as the express gate feature, yea I could probably just settle with the non deluxe version.

Finally, I know it's not hardware related, but in terms of OS. Should I just get him a 64bit vista home OS for now or opt for Windows 7 RC that 'supposed' to be release early May?

$2000 for internet and "game friendly" to me seems like overkill. You can build an AMD Phenom II system that will play every game on high settings for ~$1000. Unless he is going to be doing some real hardcore CPU intensive stuff, a Core i7 is just pure overkill, even fore gaming.

ooo, RIP for that CPU, it's still serving me strong. I know it's a lil bit overkill, but he kinda wants to have this pc for some time with some pretty good parts. It's his first time back to desktops since 99 or so. So I just want a nice solid Intel setup for him that he can upgrade piece by piece as time goes on. Now for that AMD setup, I might just do that for myself ;)

Alright guys, I think this is the final going list for this setup. Prices included are just a basic newegg prices and I'll probably be searching for deals for each of the items on.

CPU
Intel Core i7 920 $280

Heatsink
Cooler Master V8 (RR-UV8-XBU1-GP) $80

Thermal Paste
Arctic Silver Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound $9

Motherboard ASUS ASUS P6T LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX $240

Memory OCZ Platinum 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) $110

Power Supply
Corsair Memory CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V $120

Case Cooler Master
COOLER MASTER COSMOS 1000 $140

Primary HD
Western Digital Western Digital VelociRaptor WD1500HLFS 150GB 10000 RPM $180
Secondary HD
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb $70

Primary Optical
LG GH22NS30 $25

Video Card EVGA 896-P3-1257-AR $200
EVGA 896-P3-1257-AR $200

-----------------------------------------------------------------

All those items comes to about $1600-1700 (just stock price) which I think is OK .
I just hope that 750W PSU is enough for the 2x gtx260 sli setup.
Monitor, I'll probably go for Dell 2408wfp or something along those lines.

Any last suggestions or red flags?

Again thanks for all the tips guys!

With your budget, you'd be making a huge mistake to not put an SSD in as your system drive. See the SSD Anthology here on Anandtech.

It will blow away that Velociraptor in speed, and you'll have the added bonus of much less noise. Those Velociraptors have a nasty seek sound.

I would like to put in the SSD maybe for myself, but I just don't think it's something he needs. The overall spec as is right now is more than adequate for his use. Like someone else stated, even velociraptor seems like an overkill at the moment.
