So, I am thinking of buying a 1070 GTX as I have few amazon gift cards lying around I want to neutralize. I don't want to invest in a new desktop as I am hoping for external graphics to become mainstream.

I have a 90" television I paid a buttload of money for when they came out. It's only 1080p so I want to ask if I can play 2016 AAA titles @ 60 fps at very high to ultra settings with a gtx 1070.

Last game I played was FC4 on oc'd gtx 970 and it ran fine.

i7-920 not overclocked but has upgraded cooling
12 gb ddr3 ram.
dell 435 mt motherboard.
800 watt seasonic psu.

Don't waste your $. Major CPU bottleneck. Keep the GTX970, lower settings to High from Ultra in modern games, then upgrade the entire system when you have enough $. i7 920 already bottlenecks GTX970/R9 390 GPU class. Even at 4Ghz, i7 Nehalem is a serious bottleneck:

i7-960@4.0 vs i7-4790 (4.0) in 4 Games (R9 390)

You could always sell the entire PC and get Kaby Lake and Pascal refresh/Vega in 2017.
