Im new to oc and just want a modest gain. I have an i7 920 gigabyte ex58-ud3r 6gb patriot viper 1333mhz ram and monsoon 3 cooler in an antec solo case. I changed the blck to 166 to get an overclock of 3.33. My cpu temp at idle is 50. Is that too high?

50C idle means you'll probably be close or even exceed TJmax under load. Try reseating your HSF, and check to be sure that Vcore is not on Auto. Also read the sticky.

50c at idle is not good. Reset your HSF, or buy an aftermarket cooler. You want to try and keep Idle temps below 40C for a extending the life of a CPU.

I would worry more about you load temps. Do a Google search for intel linpak and download that. It's easy to follow and will load you cpu hard. I would also suggest running Prime95 for at least 12 hours (let it run overnight and in the background while you work) to ensure stability.

Dump the stock heatsink...there are many $30 sinks out there that will do the job you are looking for. As for your default vid, I would try 1.25 and then work down from there if you can while keeping it stable. Most i7's are in the 1.1 to 1.27 range...you just have to play.

Intel does not publicly disclose the TJMax, but I think ( and this is what Coretemp reports) it is ~100C.
