Ok so I've had my chip for about 2 weeks now and have pretty much finished tweaking and testing various settings. I've narrowed it down to 3 stable results and was wondering what others thought I should go with. All of the following choices are overnight prime stable.

3.6ghz at 1.20v 37c idle 65c load

3.8ghz at 1.22v 37c idle 70c load

4.0ghz at 1.41v 37c idle 80c load

I'm currently running the 3.8ghz config because I'm a little concerned about 80c load being too much heat for a 200mhz gain. I've searched online and seem to get many conflicting results on what max load temps for this chip are.

Is 80c max load too high? Should I stay with what I'm at or go ahead and run it at 4ghz?

Unless you're folding 24/7, no, I wouldn't worry at all, since you're almost never gonna hit P95 temps with daily use.

Nice OC, BTW.

upped the BCLK to 200 (4.0Ghz) cpu voltage=1.34

and these are the numbers:

17577 3DMarks
6463 SM2.0 Score
7778 HDR/SM3 Score
6562 CPU Score

CPU Speed 4000 MHz

Decided on the 3.8 ghz config. The increase in voltage and heat required to get that extra 200 mhz just seems silly to me. : p

Love this chip tho.

Same here; I left mine at 3.8 because the voltage needed to hit 4.0 was causing temps that I wasn't comfortable with. I hit right around the same temp (70C) after several hours of load.

Nice OC.

Edit: SP

2.66 ---> 3.6-4.0 OC is pretty good IMHO.

This is pretty much on-par with a lot of C2Q (minus the Q9650) that OC to similar results (and often lower).

I would like to see the i7 steppings allow for better BCLKs and an ultimately higher frequency opportunity. It would be suprising to see a new stepping offer significantly better overclocks, but it would be nice to be able to lower the multiplier and up the BCLK for a better range of overclocking options.

Have you tried updating your bios? I have same board as you and have no prob at all with 200 BCLK

Yeah, I have kicked-around the idea of updating it, but I am pretty happy with my current setup and don't want to potentially introduce issues. I doubt I would get much higher than 3.8 anyway with reasonable voltages/temps, so I am pretty content. The board can be fussy with memory, so I worry that updating the BIOS could cause issues.

I guess I am "old school" with BIOS updates...."only do it when you need to".

Just for the record and my curiosity -- where is the 130W TDP coming from on these I7's?

The Penryns had a TDP ~100W or so for the quad-core Q9xxx models.

Is it because the I7 incorporates the memory controller?

It's a chip with larger cores which does more work which means more power consumption.
