i7 920 ihs

is it possible to remove the ihs from an i7 920? how much of a temp difference could it make by replacing the stock tim? or would it run cooler without the ihs?

It is difficult to improve on the thermal conductivity of that of a well engineered metal-to-silicon interface like that in an IHS that has been soldered onto the die.

oh crap, not sure trying to melt solder off a cpu would be a great idea haha, might try lapping it. will do more reading into it though.

I lapped my 930 and am very happy with the results. There was a noticeable depression in the upper right corner of the IHS and lapping made it perfectly flat.

I really don't think de-lidding a soldered on IHS will do much for you, this isn't sandy/ivy that uses the cheap thermal compound instead of solder.

looking at options for bringing temps down a little, idle 37-40c hottest ive seen it get is 78. oc'd to 3.8. cooling with a h70

if anything id remove the ihs and leave it off, would direct contact to the h70 help bring temps down?

Its good stuff. I tested some here and here.

interesting stuff, will see how much temps look after lapping. will likely do some time next week when i have more time. and still figuring out how to lap the H70 lol. might be interesting with the rad connected
i will prob just stick to as5
