Not outside the realms of possibility, but like you I'm awaiting confirmation of that as a Z370/8700K owner.

Granted, I probably wouldn't upgrade to a '9700K' anyway, I don't have any need for an 8C CPU at this point, and probably won't for a while.
 
It's the 8700K Moonbogg edition, featuring 8 cores, 16 threads, a "brand new" 1151 motherboard, and a fair price as close to old HEDT ripoff prices as Intel can possibly get away with. I expect right around $500, and I expect most people to turn right around and get a 2700X. Most will do a 180 and walk away, proud as pi. Some will get the math wrong, do a 360 instead, buy it anyway and end up with 2 pi in their eye.

Don't be ridiculous. Such a shift has nothing to do with AMD and was coming anyway. Intel just does Intel.

Haha ok, I'll stop. For real though, it's great to think about the i5 being a viable option for even hardcore gamers who demand the best. 6/12 is going to be enough raw grunt for gaming for a long time with no compromises, except for streaming and stuff. 8/16 will be the high end standard, but that 6/12 i5 level of performance in the $200-ish range...man that's just great.

Once they release an 8c desktop chip, they can't pretend anymore.

Until they do, they can still pretend.

An 8c desktop chip is undeniably a response to AMD.
 
The question is. If Intel release an 8c that works on Z370, who would replace their 8700k for it?

I'd be tempted. Throw my desktop in the freezer and call it a day.
 
We are definitely getting a Z390 chipset.

What we don't know is if the Z370 boards will also handle the "Coffee Lake Refresh" chips.
