I'm building a computer that will be used for multiple instances of a single-threaded database number-crunching application running simultaneously (ie 4 different copies of the same .exe doing different calculations on 4 different database copies, all running in a Ramdisk).

I will be overclocking both as much as possible/stable with a prolimatech megahalems rev. b.

Another variable and uncertainty is whether triple-channel ddr3 will be more beneficial in this scenario than a dual channel 1156 board.

I've already purchased an i7-950 setup (p6x58d-e) but can reject shipment in 2 days.

Thoughts?

if your looking for the fastest single core.

Look for a westmere variant.

Or even a gulftown would be faster clock per clock, like a i7 970.

Keep the board.. change the cpu out to a westmere with 12meg cache, and 32nm processes.

You will get faster clock per clock performance, and a higher overclocking ceiling on a 32nm westmere.

I know you mean well. ;)

$300-ish, maybe a little more is the budget for this.

The cheapest i7 core u can get..

keep with 1366, so u can get a westmere in the future then, when lga2011 comes out.

Instead of going 1156, and needing a full platform refresh.

For some reason from something I read somewhere, I thought I wasn't going to have much of an upgrade option for either socket (and I didn't realize westmere was lga1366 when you suggested it.)

That's great to know and is just the confirmation I needed. And having gotten the 950 at microcenter for $200+tax, I'll stay the course.
