i7 870 throttling?

Hey guys, 2nd thread today. To tired to fix this one. This post is also poorly worded, I'm tired and have school tomorrow.

My cpu is rated for a 3.6GHz boost on one core at a time. I realized that while folding it fluctuates between stock 2.93 and 3.2. After many monitors and such I found out that instead of using the stock vcore of 1.25, or the boost vcore of 1.3, or even idle of 0.9, it is stuck at 1.15.
More searches later, I discover that it seems to be limiting itself because of it's TDP. It's a 95W CPU, and it is hitting 107.1w.

Is the TDP a recommended idea, or is it just because it's an older chip, or can I fix it?

I've been doing this all day with my videocard, and now this happens. I'm done. Help. :$
 
Disable the thermal protection thingy in BIOS.
What motherboard are you using? Are you sure it's not the VRMs throttling?

I'm not sure if it exists. No matter the load or anything, it's always 127c. Same with the -66c. But I believe VRMs can handle up to 120c, just saying.
 
Idk dude..your cores are over the thermal limit.. (72c) @ 1.18v, too..
Have you cleaned your cooler lately?
looks like your VRMS are overheating as well.
It's probably some 3+1 phase junk dell mobo.
Ditch it and get a quality mobo,and whatever else you need.. (maybe hdd..cuz Dell locks theirs down) There''s 50GB SSDs for $32 @ Microcenter I think.

Mine is running at 3.4 ghz under 100% load (BOINC) with no issues. My cooler is a bit beefier though 🙂 .
 
Horrible case and cooler. 1 92mm outtake fan. It's in a corner, but I can't move it. Ambient around 73f or so. It is such a small case though, grr. Not many coolers fit in it. It's an mATX with near exactly 160mm clearance in hight. A zigamatec dark knight might do it, but it's hard. Anyone have a good cooler that is small?

The only decent mATX 1156 board is eh..some h55 ud2 deal
I've been running caseless for about 2 1/2 years now.
I have 4 cases..2 are like new..all on the floor over there..empty.
Don't be limited to something you have to cram into a case is what I'm saying.

I'm just planning an upgrade with Christmas money to either a 4570k or 4770k and I don't want to spend much on a marginally better cooler that won't handle an oc. I am looking for a small cheap efficient cooler, and those don't exist. I'll just deal with it then.
 
I think the stock i7 lynnfield cpu cooler could throttle the cpu when boosting. That's the main reason I bought a 3rd party cooler

arctic cooling has several smaller coolers. Their freezer pro line was popular in the past (athlon/p4 era; before tuniq tower).
I'm using an alpine 11 pro rev 1 on my i7 860.
Some of them don't require a backplate (helpful on cheap cases without a cutout in the motherboard tray; so you don't have to pull out the mobo), but their mounts tend to be a bit cheapo.

You might also be interested in the scythe shuriken.

I dont really understand this I guess. You show a screenshot with 3.2Ghz turbo, the maximum 4 core turbo. So for me it seems like it runs as it should. The highest turbo is not 3.6Ghz, its 3.46Ghz. Turbobins are 4/3/2/2.

Run something like linpack if you wish to see if your CPU runs with max turbo when fully loaded.

If you plan to ditch the case anyway then why not wait for a nice deal & upgrade the whole system in one go, or certainly the parts that need replacement asap, & in the meantime just throttle down your CPU i.e. undervolt/downclock if possible through the BIOS settings. As for a low profile cooler maybe something like this will help your cause ~

I may as well bump this, it's related to a post here. A guy above mentioned that dell limits their HDDs. Is that true? My HDD is horrible, but I assumed it was due to it being 5400 rpm. I am looking at a velociraptor due to constant gaming and streaming, but I am interested in why they would do that. (FYI boot times are around 3 minutes and it still doesn't respond for about a minute and games can take a minute to load. It sucks.)

No its not true. You might have programs running on your HD in the background. Or it may simply be in bad shape.

You confuse Tcase and Tjunction. There is no way to meansure Tcase without carving in the IHS and place a sensor yourself.

Tcase is for OEMs and heatsink designers only.

Tjmax for Lynnfield is 99C.
 
If you want that machine to do folding you should disable hyperthreading, or limit folding to 4 threads or less.

Dell "limits" their HDD performance only by paying as little as possible for them. If you cloned the OS onto a new faster HDD it would run faster just like you'd expect.

Then the cores that are used skyrocket. I believe lynfield is soldered so it isn't as bad as it could be, but I still have to run it loud.
It is the worst hd possible. D: Disgustingly slow.
 
Have I mentioned that I have no access to the back of the mobo? But that one fits, so I will look at it. Mobile right now
 
Ah, yeah. You will need to get to the back of the motherboard to install it. Which is the case with all the decent LGA115x heatsinks unfortunately. So its probably best to just wait until you build your new system.

And if this is going to be a spare, rarely used system, what you might try when you have time for all the labor involved in getting the motherboard out of the case, is to potentially "fix" the HSF without spending much on it at all.....

I've heard you can get dramatically better temps out of the stock HSF by replacing the plastic pins with screws, nuts, and washers to get proper pressure between the HSF and the CPU.

Basically what you would have going on at each screw hole is this:
