Only just maybe. Games these days don't make much use of hyperthreading so that may be a reason. Overall, if you're going to be doing 3D modelling as part of your work, and still want to be able to OC and game, then 950 is better. If you have the cash that is.

The 870 has hyperthreading.

Hell even the i5 760 = i7 950 in 99% of games obviously you don't get hyperthreading there but in games (and most apps) it doesn't matter.

Generally the performance difference is going to be unnoticeable in gaming between Core i7 860/870/880/920/930/950.

What is noticeable is the cheaper motherboards of socket 1156. So unless you need the 6 Dimm slots, native SATA 6.0 off PCIe and plenty of PCIe 16x slots, then 1156 is a better value platform. However, i7 950 should overclock better due to Vtt limitations of the 1156 CPUs.

Core i5/i7s have proven to be worth the extra $50 over similar AMD systems, imo: http://www.techspot.com/review/312-mafia2-performance/page8.html

So can't really go wrong with any quad-core i5/i7.

I thought the 800 series were usually faster than the 900 in games/lowly threaded things because they have a newer turbo that boosts their clock more, and the 900's advantages don't show up (tri-channel memory).

At stock speed in many cases the better Turbo modes for the 1156 socket chips tends to win vs the 1366 chips but if you overclock 1366 usually wins.
