I bought a corsair h50 cooler ages ago and I finally got round to having a go
at overclocking my rig.
I am reading all the info I can find, and I'm following this guide...
http://www.overclockers.com/3-step-guide-overclock-core-i3-i5-i7/

...but when I even start to apply the voltages he recommends

"So, are you ready to start overclocking? After entering your BIOS and lowering the CPU & MEM multipliers, go to the voltages section and raise your IOH to 1.3-1.35V and your CPU VTT to +0.2V. Then restart your machine and go back into the BIOS,"

......My idle temps are already in the mid 40's? In fact right now at stock speed on my i7 860 (no o.c) im at 31,29,30, 27 while just typing this, whith HT off as well.
I have good airflow (I think) and the h50 is push/pull with stock fan and an Antec 120mm fan. I just switched it to exhaust and its pretty much the same as how corsair recommends (blowing in).

Do you think my cpu is a lemon? Or do I need to re seat the heat sink/block?
I would love to o.c this cpu but even when I begin to tickle it, the temps are scary compared to what I see others online with similar specs.

Do you think I have a lemon cpu?

what are your load temps?

idle temps going up is expected especially if speedstep is disabled when OCed but enabled while on stock

for a sandy bridge i7 sure. Or with really low ambient temps. Or with a really good water setup. There are alot of variable which will effect your load temps.

My 930@4.2 will hit 85-90c in the summer with 30-35c ambient temps, also stays below 70c in the winter with 10-15c ambients.
