The 5930K is really hard to resist. The 5820K has been on sale twice in the last 3 weeks at Fry's too. With Broadwell E still being several months away, I wonder why we're seeing these huge sales on Haswell E.

The naming convention is confusing. I thought the higher the name, the more expensive it is

Maybe there is a large amount of excess inventory they want to clear. MicroCenter dropped the price of the 5930K to $399.99.

Ya, you need to pay attention as their names can be confusing. For example you'd think 5820K/5930K and 5960X are based on Broadwell, like the 5775C but those are actually Haswell-E chips. Conversely, you'd think the upcoming i7 6800K/6850K/6900K/6950X are Skylake but they are Broadwell-E.

What makes it even more tricky is that you'd assume that the higher the number, the faster the CPU is overall and that's not the case either. I linked some examples showing how a 5820K OC is overall a faster processor than the i7 6700K OC:

Hmmm - that is really tempting. I'd have to drive a couple of hours to get it though and the rumors of the 8-core BW-E being relatively cheap (though I am VERY skeptical) make me want to hold off.

would these be a decent upgrade from my 2550?

it keeps locking up and i think the CPU or mobo might be at fault, so thinking about upgrading to something newish.

The i7-5930K would easily be a 40% speed increase if you overclock it. Just keep in mind, you're doing an expensive total system upgrade. New motherboard, new RAM, and you'll likely need a CPU cooler, especially if you intend to overclock.

A good water cooler should get you to 4.2 - 4.4 gHz easily, and you'll be blown away by the speed increase, I guarantee it.
